Seattle helps A’s wild-card hopes

Haniger’s heroics allows Oakland to edge closer to Yankees

-

Mitch Haniger dashed home to score the go-ahead run on a grounder in the eighth inning, then made a diving catch for the final out Sunday that gave the Mariners a 3-2 win over the New York Yankees in Seattle. The Yankees’ lead atop the AL wild-card race was cut to 21/2 games over Oakland. The top wild-card team hosts the onegame playoff. Seattle (79-64) are 71/2 games behind Oakland.

■ Stephen Piscotty homered and Oakland rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat the visiting Texas Rangers 7-3. Matt Olson had two hits, including a double, for the A’s, who are 30 games over .500 (8757) for the first time since closing out 2013 at 96-66. The Rangers’ Adrian Beltre, who was 1-for-4 with an RBI, still needs one home run to tie Stan Musial and Willie Stargell (475) for 30th on the all-time list and one hit to tie George Brett (3,154) for 16th all-time. Beltre ranks 27th on the RBI list with 1,697.

■ Justin Turner hit a two-run homer as part of a four-hit day as the Los Angeles Dodgers climbed closer to the first-place Colorado Rockies in the NL West with a 9-6 road win. The Dodgers captured two of three from the Rockies and moved to within a half-game of the division lead. Colorado has never won the NL West crown.

■ At Milwaukee, Jonathan Schoop hit a grand slam after Ryan Braun was hit by a pitch in a tense sixth inning as Milwaukee beat the San Francisco Giants 6-3, completing a sweep as Milwaukee remained 21/2 games ahead of St. Louis for the top NL wild-card spot and moved within two games of the Central-leading Chicago Cubs, who were rained in Washington.
