EVs on island, classics and 911s on highways
As our resident car nut Cam Hutchins documents on page D2 of today’s paper, the car show season is still rolling on despite the fact the sun is getting low in the sky on yet another fantastic year of chrome and horsepower.
In addition to the weekend events he highlight in his weekly roundup, there are three others taking place this weekend and next as different as they are distinct.
PLUGGED INTO SALT SPRING
The first of the trio is tomorrow’s 4th annual Electric Vehicle Festival in Sechelt.
Salt Spring Island boasts the most EVs per capita in Canada, so expect the celebration to be well attended and EVs of all manner very well represented. This is a place that has more public EV chargers than gas stations.
The 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. show will be set up in Sechelt’s Trail Bay Centre parking lot, and with the Farmers Market nearby, sustainability will certainly be a theme of the day.

A RALLY GOOD TIME
Recycling of a sort is also the theme of the Hearty Fall Classic, which sees beautiful older sports cars (must be pre-1979) doing what they were designed and built to do: drive.
Dubbed as a ‘budgetfriendly three-day driving adventure,’ the classic rolls out today and will cover some 1,200 kilometres of paved roads throughout the Pacific Northwest before concluding Sunday afternoon.
The route remains secret until registrants receive their entry packages, so there is a true spirit of adventure to this popular annual event.

CALL 911
Like the VW Beetle, the silhouette of a Porsche 911 has changed very little since its debut in the early Sixties, making it one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world. Not surprisingly, the iconic model has a rapid following, particularly on the West Coast.
911 aficionados will be out in force next weekend for the annual Porsche Rally, made even more special as the marque celebrates its 70th anniversary.
Space is still available for the two-day event, which includes a drive up the Sea-toSky Highway, some drag racing on the Pemberton Airport runway, followed by a night of fine dining and dancing at the host hotel, the Four Seasons Resort Whistler Hotel.
On Sunday, participants have the option of taking the long way home—via the twisty Duffy Lake Road to Lillooet then south down Highway 1 back to Vancouver—playing a game of golf at one of Whistler’s courses or sleeping in and hanging out in the village for the day.
