Top beauty looks for the autumn
Givenchy makeup artist dishes on the latest trends
Fall is the time to embrace the moodier side of makeup.
Soft, pink lips segue into bolder looks featuring jewel-inspired hues, while skin gets prepped with paler, mattifying products for a finer finish that looks fresh on even the greyest of winter days.
Looking to get more insider details on the top beauty looks for fall 2018?
Well, you’re in luck. We caught up with Kristy Noga, a national makeup artist for Givenchy in North America, to get all the details for must-try fall beauty trends, which shades to wear now and how to apply the perfect foundation finish. Q What are some of the hottest fall/winter makeup trends of this year?
A
This season is all about luxury. From an explosion of rich cobalts, intense emeralds and opulent burgundies to shine and metallic finishes, fall 2018 is all about adding glamour back into your routine. Also, after years of matte lips being on trend, gloss is back in a big way. With new textures and exciting colours, these glosses add sophistication and freshness to any makeup look. Q Where are the trends drawing inspiration from?
A
The rich palette of jewel tones pulls inspiration from the lush fabrics and intricate patterns of fall’s clothing. Fashion items such as metallic accents and crushed velvets lend themselves perfectly to the more intense and sultry vibe of fall/winter’s trends. Givenchy Midnight Sky collection is an excellent example. The metallic finish and sparkling textures of the Midnight Skies Sparkling Prisme Quatuor tie in perfectly with fall’s sumptuous fashions. Q In past seasons, it’s been all about contour, highlighting and bold brows. What’s the new ‘it’ element to focus on — or is it really anything goes? A After many seasons of warmtoned bronzy looks, 2018 is all about cool tones. I’m seeing an abundance of cooler-toned complexion products that mimic a fresh “pinchedcheeks” look that is sweeping in like a breath of fresh air. A gorgeous cool toned mauve or a vibrant pink is perfect for perking up any complexion. Q Any particular lip colour we should all be trying out? A Sparkling and metallic finishes are having a moment right now. Smooth, metallic formulas add volume and a plumper appearance to the lip while catching the light. Q Is there any beauty look that’s always in style?
A
Matte skin has a universal appeal because it radiates smoothness and clarity; it is also ideal for anyone who has textured skin because it camouflages skin issues such as pores and scarring. Givenchy Matissime Velvet is an excellent option because it offers light refractors to brighten the complexion while smoothing the skin’s appearance. Matte foundation can offer more coverage than dewy summer foundations so it’s great for people looking for more brightness and concealing. Q Lastly, seeing as good skin is always in, any application tips to perfectly apply foundation?
A
For a sheer application, try wetting a sponge and tapping the foundation over the skin, the dampness in the sponge will lightly sheer out the coverage. For an added dose of hydration, try spraying the sponge with a hydrating toner or finishing spray and pressing in the foundation. This will add hydration while blending in the product. For a full coverage finish, try using a traditional flat paddle foundation brush. I apply the foundation over the skin in downward strokes to build coverage and lightly hold down the baby fine hairs on the face.
