UBC STARS OF THE WEEK

-

Kristian Yli-Hietanen, forward, men’s soccer: It’s not just his name that’s a handful. Kristian Yli-Hietanen has been too much for pretty much any team he’s faced. The fourth-year forward now has seven goals in three games — including four against the UNBC Timberwolves two weeks ago, the first T-Bird to score four in a single game since Niall Cousens on Nov. 3, 2013 — and helped UBC sweep UVic this past weekend.

The North Van native scored twice in 5-0 victory Friday, and the game-winner in the 3-2 triumph on Saturday, and was named a Canada West First Star this week. His shooting percentage is off the charts, with 14 shots on goal, eight of them finding the back of the net (77.8 per cent). Hannah Clayton-Carroll, forward, women’s hockey: Last year’s team goal-scoring leader picked up where she left off. Well, almost.

A day after the Lethbridge Pronghorns spoiled UBC’s home and season opener last Friday with a 2-0 win — thanks to an acrobatic night from Horns netminder Alicia Anderson, who made 41 saves — Hannah Clayton-Carroll scored two goals to help UBC turn things around with a 3-1 victory. Clayton-Carroll scored 12 goals for UBC last year, which tied for the conference lead, while finishing second in points with 16.

The Thunderbirds head to Calgary this week to take on the Mount Royal Cougars (1-1) on Friday and Saturday.

Danielle Steer, forward, women’s soccer: The Thunderbirds took affront to having their perfect streak marred, and none more than Danielle Steer. UBC came into last Friday’s game on a fourgame win streak in which they outscored their opponents 13-0, but a defensive breakdown allowed UVic to tie the game 1-1 in the first half. Danielle Steer, the secondyear forward from South Surrey, sparked a five-goal second half as UBC won 6-1. Steer had a goal and three assists in the game as the T-Birds improved to 8-2, a game behind conferenceleading Trinity Western (9-1).
