Nissan’s next sports cars may be electrified

- ALEX REID Driving.ca

Nissan is committed to keeping sports cars like the GT-R and the 370Z in its lineup, though the next generation of those now-10-yearold models will most likely be electrified to fall in line with the rest of the brand’s range.

Jean-Pierre Diernaz, a marketing boss at Nissan, said sports cars are in Nissan’s DNA, reported Top Gear.

“It’s work in progress! Not everything is confirmed in terms of dates. Sports cars are part of who we are, so one way or another they have to be there.”

Diernaz also says electrification is good for sports cars as well as daily drivers.

“I don’t see electrification and sports cars as technologies that are conflicting,” he said. “Maybe it’s the other way around: sports cars can benefit lots from electrification.”

“At the end of the day, a motor and battery are much easier to move from one platform to another, from one sub-segment to another, than a full internal-combustion setup.”

The GT-R is most likely going to a hybrid system, but it will still remain “specifically Nissan” according to Diernaz.

The 370Z is rumoured to use Nissan’s partnership with Renault, Mitsubishi, and AMG. We’d love a new 370Z with body by Renault, manufacturing by Mitsubishi, and an AMG engine, all while getting the same mileage as a Nissan Leaf — wouldn’t you?
