Russian upends Djokovic

Russian Karen Khachanov upset a tired-looking Novak Djokovic 7-5, 6-4 to win the Paris Masters title and deprive Djokovic the chance on Sunday of matching Rafael Nadal’s record of 33 Masters titles. Djokovic, a record four-time champion at the indoor event, looked out of energy after an epic three-hour semifinal win against Roger Federer on Saturday. Khachanov showed no nerves — even though he was in his first Masters final — as he served out the match. The 22-year-old Khachanov is ranked 18th in the world.

Canada 2-0 in U20 soccer

Second-half substitute Adonijah Reid scored a tiebreakin­g goal in the 79th minute as Canada edged Guadeloupe 2-1 on Sunday in its second match of the CONCACAF men’s under-20 championsh­ip tournament. Captain Mathieu Choiniere put Canada up 1-0 seven minutes into the game. The tournament serves as regional qualifier for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland next year. Canada opened the event on Thursday with a 4-0 win over Dominica and has six points through two games to sit atop the Group D standings. Canada plays Panama on Tuesday.

Brits to honour Rooney

The Football Associatio­n will honour Wayne Rooney by allowing the DC United striker to make his 120th and final England appearance against the U.S. at Wembley Stadium on Nov. 15. The friendly fixture will be called the Wayne Rooney Foundation Internatio­nal in support of the former Manchester United forward’s charitable interests. The 33-year-old Rooney, who joined DC United from Everton earlier this year, retired from internatio­nal duty in August 2017 as his country’s record goal-scorer (53) and having won more caps (119) than any other England outfield player.

Air Force falcon on mend

An Air Force falcon injured at West Point during a prank before Saturday’s annual rivalry game between the two service academies is back

home and showing signs of improvemen­t. Air Force Academy spokespers­on Lt. Col. Tracy A. Bunco says 22-yearold Aurora “was able to fly around in her pen” on Sunday. Bunco calls the developmen­t “an extremely good sign” and says the academy is “grateful for the outpouring of support and optimistic for Aurora’s recovery.” Army officials at West Point apologized Sunday and promised a full investigat­ion.

Local favourite prevails

Local favourite Nasa Hataoka shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win the Japan Classic for her second LPGA title of the season. Hataoka offset a pair of bogeys with seven birdies at the Seta Golf Club to finish at 14-under 202, two strokes ahead of compatriot­s Momoka Ueda, Saki Nagamine and Spain’s Carlota Ciganda, who all shot 68. Canada’s Brooke Henderson finished in a tie for 41st.
