Stepping out for the holiday season
Mimi Shewchuk is looking ahead to some upcoming holiday work parties and events. She wanted to find new ways to dress her body type that will minimize her bust and tummy area and make her feel confident, relevant and comfortable in her clothing.
Mimi’s wardrobe consisted of trousers, baggy tops and flowy cardigans. Her go-to colour palette is very neutral and “safe” and consists of black, grey, beige and a few pastel tones. She never wears dresses, in fact she does not own a dress as she feels self-conscious of her height and curvy figure. She would love to inject colour into her wardrobe but doesn’t know where to begin. A NEW LOOK Red peplum cotton jersey dress: $59.99 from Winners Tan pointed block heel pumps: $39 from Winners
Necklace: Mimi’s Closet WHY THIS WORKS ■ This red, jewel-neck, peplum dress is a great colour and silhouette to streamline Mimi’s curvy body. The capsleeves help to balance out her hips and shoulders, which define her waist and create the ideal hourglass shape. The peplum cut floats away from the body and camouflages her tummy area. And of course red is considered a neutral colour, like black, navy and grey. It’s strong and fun, much like her personality, and works beautifully with her complexion.
■ To balance her vertical proportions, I chose a hemline that reached below the knee, to expose her lower leg. I selected a light-beige, block-heel pointed shoe not only for comfort, but also to elongate her leg line and create a seamless extension.
■ Comfort and versatility is key, so I opted for a cotton-jersey fabric which Mimi can move around in without feeling constricted. We went with
“V” shape necklace to open up her neckline, and an element of texture and to draw attention to her beautiful face.
Not pictured are the other pieces I sourced out for Mimi, also at Winners, including a pair of slim fitting jeans, a blouse, black leather ankle boots and a wool coat. She spent a grand total of $350 on six items, which breaks down to roughly $59 per item.
She is so excited about how confident she feels in her new look.
