First look at Artemis Fowl dazzles

- — Mark Daniell

Criminal masterminds and fairies, Kenneth Branagh is bringing the world Artemis Fowl to life.

Disney has released the first teaser trailer for next summer’s highly anticipated big screen adaptation of the popular fantasy series by Eoin Colfer (with Radiohead’s Decks Dark providing the haunting soundtrack). The story follows 12-year-old Artemis Fowl (played by Ferdia Shaw ), a teenage genius who, while searching for his father with his trusted butler (Nonso Anozie), discovers a fairy underworld.

“I warn you, boy, you are not prepared for the truth behind what you seek,” Judi Dench’s fairy law enforcement commander says in a voiceover.

“He is certainly a fellow who is often the smartest guy in the room, but of course when you’re like that you can always be at risk of being tripped up, if not by human beings at least by fairies,” Branagh says in a statement. “As he comes in contact with the fairy world, Artemis Fowl begins to understand that he may be meeting his match.”

Artemis Fowl also stars Lara McDonnell, Tamara Smart, and Josh Gad.

Colfer’s first Artemis Fowl adventure was released in 2001, with the final book – Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian

– hitting bookstores in 2012. If the film proves to be a success, you can expect further instalments. Artemis Fowl hits theatres on

Aug. 9, 2019.
