Home owned by husband of Huawei executive burgled
Vancouver police are investigating an early morning break-in at a home of a senior Huawei executive who was arrested on U.S. fraud allegations last week.
The house in the 4000block of W. 28th Avenue is owned by the husband of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies. Meng was arrested Dec. 1 while on a layover at Vancouver International Airport at the request of U.S. authorities.
On Sunday, police confirmed it received a 911 call at 5:30 a.m. reporting a home invasion at a property on W. 28th Avenue near Crown.
“The suspects fled the area after being challenged by someone in the house,” said Vancouver Police spokesman Const. Jason Doucette in an email.
“No one was injured and no arrests have been made,” it added.
By Sunday afternoon, the house in a quiet Dunbar neighbourhood appeared to be back to normal.
A man who answered the door politely declined to comment.
Witnesses say police officers were at the house earlier in the morning. Later, plainclothes officers in an unmarked vehicle could be seen parked on the street and going around the block.
Meng’s husband, Xiaozong Liu, is listed as the owner of the property, which was most recently assessed at $5.6 million.
The break-in occurred as Meng remained in custody pending the continuation of a bail hearing.
Meng is linked to at least two properties in Vancouver, including the W. 28th Avenue House and another house on Matthews Avenue in Shaughnessy, also registered to Liu.
Her bail hearing resumes Monday in B.C. Supreme Court.
