Kingsbury athlete of the year
TORONTO — Freestyle ski star Mikael Kingsbury has won the 2018 Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada’s athlete of the year.
The winner of the Toronto Star award is selected annually by a panel of sports journalists from across the country. Kingsbury, from Deux-Montagnes, Que., won his first Olympic gold medal at the Pyeongchang Games and dominated the World Cup moguls circuit. He won two Crystal Globes at the end of the last World Cup season as overall men’s freestyle points leader and overall men’s moguls leader.
Other finalists included figure skater Kaetlyn Osmond, golfer Brooke Henderson, Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and curler Kaitlyn Lawes.
NHL Hunwick back on ice
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Sabres are sending Matt Hunwick to the minors on a rehabilitation assignment in the veteran defenceman’s next step in recovering from a neck injury he sustained last summer.
Coach Phil Housley said
Hunwick will play at least one and possibly two games for Buffalo’s American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester.
Hunwick is an 11-year veteran, who was acquired with forward Conor Sheary in a trade with Pittsburgh in June. SOCCER
Steffen leaving Crew COLUMBUS, Ohio — American goalkeeper Zack Steffen will transfer to Manchester City from the Columbus Crew in July.
The Crew said Steffen will join City when the summer transfer window opens July 9. The 23-year-old played two seasons at the University of Maryland and joined Germany’s Freiburg in December 2014. He made his Crew debut in 2017 and was voted Major League Soccer’s top goalkeeper this season.
Steffen made his U.S. national team debut in January and had six appearances this year.
LACROSSE NLL names new team
PHILADELPHIA — A team in metropolitan New York will join the National Lacrosse League for the 201920 season.
The league’s 13th franchise, announced Tuesday, will be owned by sports media entertainment company GF Sports and will play its home games at the renovated Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y.
This will be the third time the NLL has tried its luck in the New York market. The Saints played at Nassau Coliseum from 1989 to 2003 before folding, and the Titans bounced between Madison Square Garden, Nassau Coliseum and the Prudential
Center in Newark, N.J., between 2006 and 2009 before relocating to Orlando.
CURLING Gushue loses opener
CONCEPTION BAY SOUTH, NL — Hometown favourite Brad Gushue began the National Grand Slam of Curling tournament with a loss Tuesday night.
The skip from St. John’s, N.L., fell 8-6 in an extra end to Switzerland’s Yannick Schwaller.
In other men’s action, Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., beat Scott McDonald of Kingston, Ont., 7-5, and Glenn Howard of Penetanguishe, Ont., topped Winnipeg’s Jason Gunnlaughson 4-1.
On the women’s side, Calgary’s Chelsea Carey started her tournament with an 8-7 win over American Nina Roth. Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa downed Jamie Sinclair of the United States 9-4 in the other women’s game Tuesday night.
