Former Leafs changed culture
While the addition of goalie Robin Lehner has made a huge difference for the New York Islanders, the acquisitions of ex-Leafs Leo Komarov and Matt Martin have been just as big — even if it doesn’t necessarily show on the scoresheet.
“I got the opportunity to be with them for two years (Martin) and three years (Komarov), so I knew what they were going to bring, not only on the ice, but also off the ice,” said GM Lou Lamoriello.
“They’ve done that exceptionally well. All the new people who come from different directions have been tremendous. Certainly, Leo and Matt, you know their character and you know their commitment. You know their personality. So it certainly wasn’t a surprise to me. They’re two of the more popular people here among their teammates.”
Komarov has six goals and 16 points in 48 games, while Martin has five goals and 10 points in 37 games. But according to Lamoriello, both veterans have contributed even more to the team in terms of having their teammates buy in to what was a new culture and coaching change.
“If you want to have success, you have to be willing to give up your identity for the good of the team,” said Lamoriello. “And that was consistent through each and every player. That’s rare. Usually, you have one or two that find a way to become a renegade, but that has not been the case.”
