Five reasons to check out Snail Mail

- — Shawn Conner

1 LINDSEY JORDAN

Snail Mail is the nom de rock of Maryland singer/guitarist Lindsey Jordan, a new sensation making lots of noise with her 2018 debut fulllength album, Lush.

2 MATADOR

Snail Mail’s Lush is out on Matador, the indie record label known for helping invent the ’90s with acts like Pavement, Yo La Tengo and Cat Power. The sound of Lush tracks like Heat Wave and Pristine will be instantly familiar to fans of decades-old indie-rock bands like Velocity Girl and the Spinanes.

3 EARLY STARTER

The 19-year-old Jordan started playing classical guitar the age of five. Not only does she have chops, but in the grand tradition of alt-rock predecessors like Sonic Youth, she likes alternate tunings. She reveals her classical guitar training on the Lush track Let’s Find an Out.

4 “TRENDS, FRIENDS AND DISASTROUS HOUSE PARTIES.”

Jordan began writing her own songs at 12. The Standard has referred to her lyrics as “brilliant” while The Guardian said that Jordan “sings about trends, friends, disastrous house parties, wild crushes and devastating breakups with raw candour.”

5 A STAR IS BORN

According to an interview with spotify.com, Jordan has been on tour for most of the last year-and-a-half. Along the way, she’s opened for other female-fronted indierock guitar outfits such as Girlpool and Waxahatchee as well as headlined sold-out gigs of her own. Live, Snail Mail has been known to cover Semisonic’s 1998 hit Closing Time, Coldplay’s Speed of Sound and even Bradley Cooper’s Shallow (from A Star is Born).
