Surrey RCMP search for gunman after transit cop shot on platform
Public warned to stay way from Scott Road SkyTrain station
A Transit police officer was shot and seriously hurt on the platform of the Scott Road SkyTrain Station in Surrey on Wednesday.
At 4:20 p.m., police received several 911 calls reporting a shooting, Surrey RCMP said. At the same time, the RCMP were alerted by the Transit Police that one of their male officers had been shot on the station platform.
“The officer has received serious but-not-life-threatening injuries and has been transported to the hospital,” the RCMP said in a statement.
An employee at the nearby Hertz Car Sales said there were several shots fired, followed by multiple police cars arriving within five minutes.
SkyTrain service was immediately stopped at the Scott Road Station as dozens of emergency vehicles descended on the area.
The assistant commissioner commanding Surrey RCMP, Dwayne McDonald, said the transit officer, identified as Josh Harms, 27, had approached a man on the platform to “engage” with him and was met with almost immediate gunfire.
Harms received multiple injuries, but was reported to be in good spirits in hospital.
At deadline, the shooter had not been captured, leading to a warning from police for all people to stay away from the area as the incident was “fluid and ongoing.”
At 7 p.m. there was still a heavy police presence in the area. The gates to Scott Road Station were drawn closed, where commuters transferred between buses outside. SkyTrains briefly paused just outside the station before passing through to Gateway or Columbia.
Inside, two investigators carrying flashlights combed the station’s south platform.
