Unfortunately, Peters all business with Super Bowl approaching

- DON BRENNAN

ATLANTA — Rather sadly, Marcus Peters was on his best behaviour.

Attempts to get the sometimes outspoken Rams cornerback to start up the trash talking were futile on Media Night at the Super Bowl, and two days later — despite his grumpy disposition and the backpack he wore that made it look like he was anxious to go somewhere — Peters simply answered questions in as few words as possible.

Surprising, really, since Peters is on something of a winning streak with his mouth.

When the Saints beat the Rams in Week 9, and New Orleans coach Sean Payton said the success his star receiver Michael Thomas had against Peters was a match he liked “a lot,” Peters shot back.

“Tell Sean Payton, keep talking that s---,” he told reporters. “We gonna see him soon. You feel me? Yeah. Cause I like what he was saying on the sideline, too. Tell him he can keep talking that s--- and I hope he sees me soon. You feel me? Then we’re going to have a nice little bowl of gumbo together.” Spicy stuff, eh?

Well, the two teams did meet in the NFC Championship game, Thomas had just four catches for 36 yards, and the Rams are now in Atlanta.

Score a big one for Peters. Yet at his podium on Wednesday, the 26-year-old only said the next opponent is a great team with a great quarterback. Politically correct. Dull.

Here’s a sampling of his Q and A session with a scrum:

Getting tired of the media yet?

“Nah, I ain’t even tripping.” What would it mean for you to get an interception Sunday?

“It would be big.”

Just big?

“It’s not me. It’s about the team. There’s no individuals on this team. We all fight together, we grind together. We prepare together. We trust that we can get it done. Coach has been instilling the ‘we’ not ‘me’ approach.

What makes this team different than others you’ve played for?

“We like each other.” Friendships help a team win?

“Yeah, you’ve got to like the people you go to work with.”

Anxious to get to Sunday?

“Waking up every day and saying whoa, we at the Super Bowl, man. This is dope. I’m ready to get to work. Get to it. You only get to play this game once, some people, so you’ve got to take full advantage of it.”

You have fun playing ... you don’t really look like you’re having fun now.

‘What day is it, Wednesday? We’ve got a couple of more days before we get to playing. We’ve got a week of preparation, man. I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”

This mid-week is no different than others for you?

“I’d just be at my home and sleeping in my own bed at night. That’s the only thing that’s different. We’re in Atlanta.”

Are you sure you’d rather not be right here, talking to us?

“Nah, I’m right where the NFL said we need to be at.
