Comedy star says women make best bosses
Haddish looks to entrepreneurs like Oprah for personal inspiration
Tiffany Haddish shot to stardom in 2017’s female-focused Girl’s Trip, where her no-holds-barred humour and delivery stole the show from her more famous co-stars. Now she’s starring in another female-centric film, Like a Boss.
Haddish plays Mia, who, with her best friend Mel (Rose Byrne), runs a cosmetics company they’ve built from the ground up. When the company finds itself in dire financial straits, the two find it hard to pass up a tempting buyout offer from a cosmetics giant run by another fierce female boss, Claire Luna (Salma Hayek). The ordeal tests Mel and Mia’s friendship, and chaos ensues.
QWhat was your favourite part about working on this movie?
AMy favourite part of working on this movie was developing a relationship with
Rose Byrne and Salma Hayek and, oh my God, Jennifer Coolidge is amazing. And Billy Porter. Those relationships that I’ve created from working on this movie (were) worth it. New friends, learning experiences and it was a big growing process for me. I’m a better person now because of it.
QWho’s your No. 1 girl boss, the woman you look up to most?
AOprah Winfrey. Oprah Winfrey for sure. She’s employed many, many people, and I want to be able to do something like that. I want to be able to employ many people and put food on people’s tables and put their kids through college and create some generational wealth. I think that’s important. And women are the best bosses anyway! Let’s be honest, we run businesses better than men because we can handle emotions.
QIn a city as politically minded as the District (of Columbia) and the craziness of this election cycle, is there someone you’re following or that you support?
AI’ve learned a very valuable lesson a long time ago, and that’s don’t talk about things you don’t know about. And if you know about them and you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing at all.
QYou’ve been to Washington before. There’s a big Ethiopian/Eritrean community here, which I know you’re a part of.
AI wish I could go this time. I have more work to do here, so I can’t go this time around, but I’ve been to many Eritrean restaurants here. I come for the Eritrean Festival, and I go to the embassy often.
