MCGIVERON, Terence

-

September 9, 1934 - April 29, 2020 It's with great sadness we share the passing of our Terry who slipped away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 29, 2020 at The Residence at Morgan Heights, Surrey, BC. The family returned to Vancouver in 1945 where Terry attended Sexsmith Elementary School and became a member of the 7th Vancouver Company of The Boy's Brigade. During Terry's high school years at John Oliver in South Vancouver he was a paperboy for the Vancouver Sun. He graduated with the class of '51, then went to Radio School at King Edward. With his Radio Ticket, Telegraph Key and Head Set in hand, Terry headed to Estevan Point where he was employed by the Government of Canada as a Radio Operator. There he met "Cougar" Annie and had fond memories of peaceful days there. Around 1955 he signed on to the weather ship, H.M.C.S. 'Stone Town' again as a Radio Operator. The ship sailed from Esquimalt heading 900 miles due west where it remained for 6 weeks, bobbing up and down on the stormy North Pacific. It took courage and stamina to go out on deck to release weather balloons while the 'Stone Town' was being tossed around, and it was also on these trips that Terry made many life-long friends. Terry's next adventure was that of an Air Traffic Controller and he headed to Winnipeg in the middle of winter for training. He graduated in March 1957 and was posted to Pat Bay Tower on Vancouver Island. In September, he met Joan and his bachelor days were over. He transferred to Vancouver Tower the following year, then to the Air Traffic Control Centre at YVR. Terry and Joan were married in August 1959. Terry was a brilliant Air Traffic Controller and described as 'the best of the best' by his colleagues. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Terry loved working in his garden, building rockeries, arbors, fences, patios, a woodshed and, together with Joan, they designed a beautiful rhododendron garden. His love of the outdoors is well know. Terry was a Cub and Scout leader, who enjoyed taking the troop on camping and canoeing trips. He was an excellent snow and water skier. Together with ATC friends, he organized canoe, kayak, hiking and cycling adventures, TM Tours and Grey Cup pools. Terry was a very special person to so many. Terry was always whistling, wellknown as a practical joker and someone who's smile was contagious. An animal lover, Terry adored the family's pets and cared for all the wildlife he encountered. In the yard, the friendly Steller's Jays and Douglas squirrels found a special place in his heart and he always carried peanuts in his pockets for them. Terry was predeceased by his sister Janet, brother Tom, niece Tracy, and nephew Dean and is survived by his loving family, Joan, Brad (Deborah), Susan (Jay), grandson Cole, sister Lennie, nieces Cathy, Janice, nephew Brett and cousins. The family wishes to thank the loving staff at The Residence at Morgan Heights for the devoted and excellent care they gave Terry each and every day. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to one of Terry's favourite charities, Critter Care Wildlife Society, BC Wildlife Federation or Union Gospel Mission. No service will be held at Terry's request, but the family invites you to raise a glass in his memory.
