Fine social-distancing violators — warnings aren’t working

-

I just read that the beach parking lots are to remain closed this weekend. Bylaw officers handed out over 1,800 warnings about social distancing. Warnings don’t work. Fine people not following the rules $1,000 every time and give the money to health-care workers.

Friday, we were in Stanley Park and people were actually moving the barricades so they could bike on the seawall.

Sunday in White Rock, some people were actually pulling the barricades apart and squeezing strollers and even a wheelchair up onto the Promenade. The few that aren’t following the rules are ruining it for everyone.

I hope the roads in Stanley Park remain closed to traffic, the seawall remains closed to cyclists and all the parking lots at beaches stay closed until the end of summer. I’m afraid of a second, more deadly outbreak of COVID-19.

And no more warnings! Fine everyone not following the rules.

Gasoline prices in Chilliwack

I wonder if there is anyone who can explain why gas prices are so high in Chilliwack? Regular gas is $0.958 a litre here at the moment.

In Vancouver it’s $0.929! Vancouver’s price includes a transit tax of 15-to-17 cents a litre.

Does anyone out here feel like they’re being ripped off?

Criminals don’t obey gun laws

Re: Gun ban should be viewed as step in right direction

I’m responding to the letter regarding the “military-style firearms ban as a step in the right direction.”

First off, I would like to thank Mike Runte for his service as a police officer.

I would like to ask him how would a ban on such firearms actually prevent them from being obtained and used by criminals as I don’t believe the law-abiding military style firearm owners are the ones committing criminal acts with them.

I don’t believe that a ban of such firearms would keep them out of the hands of criminals much like banning high-performance cars would reduce speeding or drunk driving. Such bans only affect the law-abiding and I have yet to see a criminal obey or respect the law.

Firearm ownership in Canada has many hurdles and restrictions for the prospective or current firearm owner.

From what I’ve seen and read, a legal firearm owner in Canada faces harsher punishment from our “justice” system if they run afoul of the firearms act than a criminal would who uses a firearm during a crime as most firearm charges are plea-bargained away.

Shame on the politicians and law-enforcement officials who are purporting solutions that don’t solve the problem.

Time to enforce bus-seat rules

Rules that are posted plain as day inside buses must be better driver-enforced. Too many “don’t care” attitudes. Where it says “No Seat” … you don’t sit … period! Understand the importance of this or walk.
