Pacifica continues to freshen up
’21 version has advanced safety features and an all-wheel-drive system that’s optional in some ’20s
Chrysler’s newly refreshed 2021 Pacifica will deliver a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, along with what FCA calls a “fresh new look” and more advanced safety features when it hits dealerships later this year.
But as sort of an advance glimpse at the new model, some 2020 versions will now have the 2021’s AWD system available as an option.
This early arrival of the AWD system is being dubbed the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWD Launch Edition, on the top-of-the-line Touring L model.
This early introduction allows Chrysler to claim the Pacifica as the only vehicle to pair AWD with class-exclusive Stow ’n Go seating, and the only vehicle in its segment capable of transferring all available engine torque to the rear wheels.
The new AWD system is also able to stop the driveshaft from spinning when AWD is not required, a class-exclusive feature FCA claims improves fuel efficiency. To accommodate the new torque split and rear-drive module, Chrysler has rejigged the suspension damping all around and raised the Pacifica’s height by 20 millimetres.
The AWD system employs a brake-lock differential system to help enhance traction. ride
The AWD option also features a special 18-inch wheel brake package with larger vented front rotors, and calipers with more capacity.
The 2021 Pacifica will give parents a bird’s-eye view of the kids, thanks to the new FamCAM interior camera, and allows the driver a view of rear-facing child seat occupants in the second row, even letting them zoom in on passengers.
