Five reasons to check out this year’s e-Volver Festival

- SHAWN CONNER

1 THEATRE FOR THE MOMENT

Upintheair Theatre’s first e-Volver Festival presents a series of nine shows by local and national companies, all performed live on digital platforms. The performances reflect our current time not just through the use of technology but also through their subject matter and formats. All events are free, but advance registration is required for some performances.

2 NEW SOCIETIES

An immersive interactive

digital experience in the guise of a strategic board game, New Societies invites players to compete against or collaborate with each other to build their ideal society. Presenter Re: Current Theatre (Vancouver/ Toronto) describes its esthetic as “a nexus of old and new technologies, pop culture, games, and academic theory.”

3 SELECTIVE MEMORY

Vancouver creator/ performer/DJ Todd Simmons calls his show a “DJ Set meets Choose-Your-OwnAdventure

story.” Audience members choose a record from Simmons’ collection and he shares personal stories associated with the selected piece of vinyl.

4 HOUSE OF RICE: IN RICE-OLATION

This creation from the selfproclaimed (via cbc.ca) “queer Asian revolutionist” Shay Dior is a digital art drag show that explores the reality of being queer and Asian in Vancouver via audio, video, and live performances.

5 DESIREE AMA

Vancouver playwright/actor Scott Button’s play features a YouTube life-coach (Meaghan Chenosky) who hosts a quarantine AMA on Zoom. But a call from a mysterious stranger with a connection to her past sends our heroine on a journey of self-inquiry.
