Inmate in Surrey Pretrial Centre thanks front-line workers

-

I’m writing in response to the article COVID-19: ICU Patients in Metro Vancouver Hospitals Survived at Higher Rates.

It says our overall death percentage is lower than places like Wuhan, New York, Seattle, and Italy. I want to congratulate all our health-care workers, nurses and doctors for the ceaseless effort that they give to patients. Our system may have some flaws, but the fact we outdo places with more overall stature than ours says it all.

Thank you to our front-line workers and anybody who makes our health-care system better. Congratulations and much love from everybody inside doing time with me.

Thanks for honouring grads

Just wanted to pass along a huge thankyou for the awesome display of grads that you have honoured in the Province newspaper. What a great thing to do for these kids who don’t get to celebrate in the traditional way.

It looks amazing and it is so very generous of you all.

Cost of living keeps going up

The minimum wage in B.C. is going up to $14.60 per hour. But the prices on everything else goes up too. Every year, rent goes up, groceries go up, gas goes up, bills go up. I pay $180.66 on car insurance every month — that is way too high for ICBC.

If people find it hard now, wait for a couple of years and there will be a lot more people on the streets, homeless. Seniors and people on disability and people who are low income find it hard to survive month to month. For low-income people, once they pay their rent, bills, and groceries for the month, there isn’t a lot left.

Pedestrians must be careful

Re: Prioritize pedestrian safety near bus stops

Whether or not there are traffic lights or marked crosswalks at intersections nearest to bus stops, there are things pedestrians can do to optimize/ensure their safety.

Do not cross mid-block as too many pedestrians do east and west of Boundary at Kingsway, where there are traffic lights and marked crosswalks.

Wear light or reflective clothing so you are visible during darker and sometimes rainy times. Look both ways before crossing.

Make eye contact with drivers. Do not use your phone while walking. Do not start crossing when the lighted hand signal has turned red, as you do not have time to safely cross.

When there are pedestrian-vehicle accidents, the pedestrian(s) are at the greatest risk of injury or death.

All of us must do what we can for optimal safety for all.
