BELL, Barry Lyall
September 7, 1951 - June 15, 2020
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Barry on June 15, 2020 at St. Paul's Hospital due to Kidney Failure.
Barry was predeceased by his parents, Lyall O. Bell and Kay R. Bell (nee Harris). He leaves behind his loving wife of 35 years, Sharon Dagenais (nee Jones), his sister, Barbara Bell-Olsen (Tony Andrews), his dear Nephew and Niece, Chris and Kerry Olsen whom he adored, their Dad, Ray Olsen (Gail Hunt) and his Auntie Mary Ward.
Born in Vancouver, Barry lived his entire life here. (Why would you live anywhere else?). The Bell family were long-time members of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club which Barry joined in 1962. He served on the Club's Executive for eight consecutive years and was so proud to serve as Commodore in 1992 with his Flag Ship being the Four Bells.
To avoid juvenile delinquency, Barry joined the Seaforth Highlanders as a Private in early 1967 and was Honourably Released as Warrant Officer on March 31, 1980. A highlight during these years was to serve NATO for a few months in 1971 in Germany as part of the 3 Canadian Mechanized Commando Unit of the Canadian Airborne Regiment. Lasting friendships were made during these years. The stories were in abundance and Barry never let the facts get in the way when regaling an audience. To this day, some people still wonder just which War Barry was in. He remained a member of the Seaforth Association and was also a supporting member of their Patrons' Corps.
In 1975 Barry, together with Wilfried Bischof, started Canco Cranes & Equipment Ltd., an overhead crane manufacturing and material handling company. Their Company gained a solid reputation for quality workmanship, dependability and trustworthiness. Barry was the sales/management side of the Company and left Willy to run the plant with his expertise in craftsmanship. Barry was proud of his employees and is remembered by them for his leadership, competency and fairness. Upon Barry's retirement in 2015, Willy became the sole owner of Canco and continues the legacy they started.
Barry touched the hearts of many. As he said, he grew on people like moss. He loved his time on the water, whether it be on his own boat in local waters or travelling the oceans on cruise ships. An Eight Bells Club Service will be held at RVYC when appropriate. Should you wish to honour Barry's memory, please donate to your charity of choice.
Sail on Our Dear Friend.
