Sunset ends race, Hamlin takes win

-

Despite weather delays forcing the Pocono 350 to conclude with the sun sunk below the Pennsylvania horizon at the light-less 2.5-mile triangle track in Long Pond, Denny Hamlin became the winningest active driver at Pocono and tied Jeff Gordon for the most all-time Cup wins at the track with six.

The victory was also the series-leading fourth of the year for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick could not track down Hamlin over the final laps and had to settle for second place.

The margin of victory was just over three seconds.

Finishing third was Erik Jones, Hamlin’s teammate, followed by Chase Elliott of Hendrick Motorsports and Aric Almirola, Harvick’s teammate.

WIN SOME, LOSE SOME

To start the day at Pocono, Brandon Jones held off Sheldon Creed during a fierce two-lap battle and pulled away to win the rain-delayed Pocono Organics 150.

Jones sealed his first NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series victory when Creed’s Chevrolet got loose in the Tunnel Turn as he and Jones were racing side-by-side for the lead. Jones pulled out to a comfortable advantage through Turn 3 and arrived at the finish line with a 0.864-second margin over runner-up Austin Hill, who charged past Creed in the final corner.

Jones’ enjoyment from winning the Pocono Organics 150 was short-lived, however. He is a full-time NASCAR Xfinity competitor, and wrecked on the first lap of the Xfinity Series race.

BRISCOE WINS XFINITY

Chase Briscoe recovered from a pit road speeding penalty and a spin with 21 laps left to pick up his fourth NASCAR Xfinity Series victory of the season in Sunday’s Pocono Green 225.

In a race that went to overtime after a record ninth caution at 2.5-mile Pocono Raceway, Briscoe surrendered the lead to Ross Chastain in Turn 1 after the final restart but reclaimed the top spot in the Tunnel Turn. He finished 1.015 seconds ahead of the No. 10 Chevrolet a lap-and-ahalf later.
