Range Rover celebrates 50th anniversary
Limited-edition in vintage colours commemorates longevity of iconic off-road brand
Land Rover’s Range Rover is turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, the brand is building a special-edition model with throwback colours in limited numbers.
The first Range Rover was introduced in 1970, and featured an aluminum V-8 engine, permanent 4WD, and disc brakes on all four wheels.
It would be another 11 years before the four-door version was unveiled, based on a conversion first completed by Swedish company Monteverdi. This would set the Range Rover up as the versatile vehicle we know today.
The Range Rover Fifty commemorates the longevity of the brand, and just 1,970 examples of the special edition will be made.
Based on the Autobiography, the Range Rover Fifty features exterior accents in Auric Atlas colour and 22-inch wheels to set it apart from the standard model. A badge with “Fifty” in script — created personally by Professor Gerry McGovern OBE, Land Rover’s chief creative officer — appears on the exterior of the vehicle, as well as throughout the interior on the unique “1 of 1970” centre console plaque, headrests, dashboard, and illuminated tread plates.
The vehicle will be available in both standard and long-wheelbase models, in a choice of Carpathian Grey, Rosello Red, Aruba, and Santorini Black. Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations is also offering the Range Rover Fifty in one of three Heritage exterior colours from the original Range Rover — Tuscan Blue, Bahama Gold and Davos White — albeit in very limited numbers.
Several engines will be available, including a plug-in hybrid option.
