GRAHAM, Douglas David

-

September 12, 1944 - June 25, 2020

Doug passed away peacefully at home having spent the final weeks of his life surrounded and cared for by his family. He shared many memories with us and enjoyed his view of the mountains, the ocean and the hummingbirds that visited his window.

Doug is lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 52 years Mary, his son David Graham and daughter-in-law Ann Moran, his daughter Catherine Borritt and son-in-law Steve Borritt. His sense of humour, pancake breakfasts, crib games and grammar lessons will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Ross, Scott and Hugh Graham and Molly, Will and Finn Borritt. They loved him dearly. Doug is also lovingly survived by his sister, Helen Remely, and predeceased by his sister, Lois White.

Doug graduated from Lord Byng. He obtained his Commerce degree from UBC in 1967. He started his career as a Chartered Accountant in Montreal, but he and Mary soon returned to Vancouver. He was a partner at Grant Thornton where he worked for over thirty years. Doug specialized in tax, a love he received from his father and passed on to his son. Some of Doug's favourite pastimes over the years included bridge, singing, golf, tennis, travel, gardening, fishing and stargazing. His long-standing bridge group was a highlight of his week, particularly when he came home 50 cents ahead. Doug sang in the Knox church choir for decades and around the house everyday. He knew all the tunes but often had his own version of the lyrics. Lazy days on the Sunshine Coast with family and good friends were so very special to him. Doug was a constant fixture on his grandchildren's sports fields. He generously volunteered his time to a wide variety of organizations and individuals.

Friends have described Doug as honest, kind, gentle, caring, principled and someone who was always ready to see the best in everyone. Many have referred to his twinkly eyes, wonderful sense of humour, intellect, hugs and warm smile. He was both a gentleman and a gentle man.

The socially-distanced support that Doug and Mary received from their friends and family during Doug's final months warmed their hearts. Huge thanks go to all the doctors, nurses and caregivers who teamed with us to care for Doug.

We are disappointed that COVID prevents us from gathering with you to hear more memories and stories of Doug. Our immediate family will come together for a small service. We hope you will take a moment to remember this special man in your own way. Should you wish to honour Doug's memory, please consider a donation to bccancerfoundation.com or knoxunitedvancouver.org
