Ram’s Heavy Duty is darkness in truck form

- MATTHEW GUY Driving.ca

What’s a perfect recipe for keeping the buying public engaged in a model that’s been on the market for a year or so? Create some new versions with different paint and wallpaper, of course.

This time around Ram has decided to dip its excellent Heavy Duty truck in a pot of inky black paint.

The 2020 Ram Heavy Duty Limited Black model offers a monochromatic appearance package that makes the most of dark accent trim.

This includes blacking out the grill and its R-A-M billboard, door handles, sideview trailer tow mirrors, and tow hooks.

The headlight and tail light bezels have also been treated to the Back-in-Black motif. Trucks with single rear wheels come with 20-inch black rims, while dual-rear-wheel models feature 17-inchers in the name of payload and hauling.

There are no mechanical changes in this package, which is offered in both 4x2 and 4x4 configurations. Feel free to fit either a growly 6.4-litre Hemi V8 or the 6.7-L Cummins Turbo Diesel in-line six to your new Ram Black Edition.

Don’t forget — the latter is available in two power outputs, only one of which provides a four-figure torque rating.

Inside, the Black will be familiar to anyone who’s spent time in a Limited, which is to say it’s lined with sumptuous materials and is a very pleasant place in which to spend a long haul.

The brand’s 12-inch Uconnect infotainment screen dominates the dashboard, serving up any number of readouts to the driver and passenger.

In a fit of acoustic largesse, it also houses SiriusXM’s new Personalized Stations Powered by Pandora service, which delivers a combination of music curation and personalization so you’re always ready to blast Jerry Reed or The Road Hammers when the situation calls for it.

The new Heavy Duty Limited Black Edition is limited to exactly the number they can sell through regular dealer channels.
