Leave team names alone

- Jim Bray Port Colborne

So the mayor and city council of Thorold have told the minor hockey association that it has to change the logo and name of the association because it is offensive. Offensive to whom?

Sports teams and franchises have chosen names such as Blackhawks, Chiefs, Braves and Indians not to be demeaning to aboriginals, but quite the contrary, it is in respect for a people who, during their fight to save their homes, and way of life, fought overwhelming odds with tenacity, passion and extreme bravery. These sports organizations were given these names to inspire that kind of dedication in their participants.

This political correct nonsense has gotten out of hand. Before you know it PETA will be protesting in cities such as Detroit, Chicago, Miami and Anaheim because the names of their sporting organizations are demeaning to wildlife, and someone has to defend them.

Let’s not forget names such as Canucks, Canadians (yes I spelled it correct, it is spelled wrong in Montreal) or Americans, these names could be seen as racist, as they target certain ethnic segments of society.

The final straw will be when tree-huggers protest the Toronto’s NHL team, everyone knows that maple leaves are green, how dare someone disrespect it by painting it blue.

Ridiculous scenarios, yes, but so is the decision to change the name of the Thorold hockey association, or any other sports association because a small segment of society imagines the name to be offensive.

The management of the Thorold Blackhawks have said it will cost upward of $100,000 to make the change, who is going to pay for that? Maybe Mr. Mayor and council should foot the bill.
