Taxes need to come down for Canadians
Politicians need to spend less time coming up with ways to spend our money and more time trying to save it.
That much is desperately clear after reading a new report from the Fraser Institute. After looking at the data, the researchers discovered Canadians are spending almost half of their income on taxes. It’s more than we’re spending on the basic necessities of life — food, shelter and clothes.
There’s something seriously wrong with society when the people are working more for the government than they are their own families.
The study, which looks back as far as 1961, shows things have gotten worse over the years. Taxes have shot up much higher than the cost of basic necessities. This means government is doing more things and doing them at a greater cost. It has to stop.
Total government expenditures are set to be $317.1 billion for the current fiscal year. That’s a lot of money. The bulk of it is spent as transfers to people and other levels of government as well as paying the salaries of public servants.
How much of this spending is unnecessary? We’re guessing a lot. After all, almost every day there are stories of government expenses that just don’t need to exist.
Health Minister Jane Philpott is repaying taxpayers $3,703 for over-priced limousine trips. But she’s only paying that back after the story was exposed. We’ll take a wild guess it’s not the only case of current government waste.
The federal Liberals are continuing the pork barrel expenses that the Conservatives undertook with such gusto. On Monday, they announced a bunch of “targeted investments,” including building new forward tees at a golf course in Nova Scotia.
Is that why we’re being taxed to the hilt? To pay for golf course maintenance?
It’s simply unrealistic and defies basic math to keep taxing hardworking Canadians for an ever-increasing list of government projects, few of which the people actually want.
Regardless of who is in power, the people always wind up being taxed more. This has to change. It’s time for taxes to come down. Soon the average hardworking person won’t be able to take it anymore.
