Brock and acting provost split
Brock University is not proceeding with the appointment of a senior administrator who was brought on board by Wendy Cukier.
Martin Singer, a scholar and administrator for more than four decades at Concordia and York Universities, was supposed to be taking on the role of acting provost at Brock this school year.
A statement on Brock’s website Thursday said the school and Singer have jointly decided not to proceed with the ap- pointment.
The statement said Singer, who retired in 2015 from York, was approached earlier this year by Brock’s then incoming pres- ident Cukier to serve as acting provost.
The school’s Board of Trustees approved Singer’s appointment in June.
But just days before the school year was to start, the university announced it had parted ways with Cukier.
“The Aug. 29 announcement that Dr. Cukier would not be Brock’s next president significantly changed the context of, and expectations for, the acting provost position,” the Sept. 22 statement said.
“It is our shared view that Brock’s acting president should have the ability to choose the acting provost for 2016-17, with a bias toward someone who is thoroughly familiar with the Brock context and culture.”
Brock’s vice president of administration Brian Hutchings is continuing in the acting president and vice-chancellor role until the end of the month.
The school’s former president Jack Lightstone retired at the end of June after 10 years at the helm.
Cukier, a vice-president at Ryerson University, had been chosen in December 2015 as Lightstone’s replacement. She has since returned to Ryerson.
