Men’s team splits at RBC Cup

Ryan Lambert (Blessed Trinity) contribute­d 13 points as Mount Allison dumped St. Mary’s 39-8. Lambert was good on all three field goal attempts (37, 32 and 37 yards) and made all four converts.

Harry McMaster (Saint Paul) caught two balls for 45 yards to help Western edge McMaster 1918. Max Cameron (Sir Winston Churchill) had a reception for 16 yards in the loss.

Guelph’s two Niagara running backs were front and centre again for the Gryphon offence as they led Guelph to a 52-8 thumping of York. Johnny Augustine (Notre Dame) rushed 22 times for 133 yards and two touchdowns and caught a pass for six yards, while Mack Jones (Lakeshore Catholic) had 16 rushes for 141 along with a catch for eight yards.

Jordan Terrio (Saint Paul) replaced the injured Ryan Nieuwestee­g (Saint Paul) and returned eight punts for 168 yards. He also had a tackle on special teams. Linebacker Dean Yaromich (Blessed Trinity) had three tackles for Guelph while Lucas Brennan (Sir Winston Churchill) had two tackles and Greg Corfield (Saint Paul) and Donnie Egerter (Saint Paul) had one tackle apiece.

Kicker Mike Domagala (Holy Cross) racked up another 13 points for Carleton as the Ravens downed Waterloo 43-15. Domagala was perfect with three field goals (27, 21 and 17 yards) and four extra points. Wideout Wilson Birch (Westlane) added a catch for 12 yards and a tackle for the Ravens. Freshman QB AJ Stewart (Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) saw his first action and was three-for-eight passing for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Christie (Sir Winston Churchill) ran for 183 yards on 27 carries and added a touchdown as Manitoba outlasted Alberta 6759 in seven overtimes. Christie also had two punt returns for 19 yards. The game was tied 28-28 at the end of regulation. Akeeno Williams (Grimsby) had 3.5 tackles for Manitoba.

Curran nets two

Former Niagara Falls Canucks’ forward Johnny Curran scored a pair of goals as the Niagara Purple Eagles tied RPI 3-3 in their non-conference opener.

The Purple Eagles return to Dwyer Arena hosting the No. 19 Ohio State Buckeyes on Friday and Saturda. Both games will start at 7 p.m.

Brock

The Brock male and female athletes of the week for the week ending Oct. 23 are men’s lacrosse player Alex Guiney and women’s soccer player Megan Salisbury.

Guiney, a fifth-year sport management major, helped lead the Brock men’s lacrosse team to three victories over the weekend. In three games, he was outstandin­g allowing just 13 goals on 51 shots for a .745 save percentage and 4.33 goals-against average. Guiney will be a major key to the Badgers success as they host the 2016 CUFLA Baggataway Cup Nov. 4-6 at Alumni Field.

Salisbury, a fourth-year education major, led the Brock women’s soccer team to a 1-1 record this past week. In the Badgers 2-0 win over the Laurier Golden Hawks, Salisbury setup both Brock goals as she finished tied for the team lead in points with a career best six points (four goals and two assists).

Lacrosse

The men’s field lacrosse team ended the regular season with a 21-3 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks.

Brock jumped out to an 11-0 lead, and never looked back as they clinch second place in the CUFLA West Division.

Brandon Slade led all scorers with a game-high eight points finishing with three goals and five assists. Brandon Staal contribute­d with three goals and three assists while Davis Neal added the natural hat trick and one assist. In goal, Alex Guiney recorded the victory.

The Badgers also topped the McMaster Maruaders 12-6.

Staal led the attack registerin­g three goals and one assist.

Women’s soccer

The women’s soccer team captured their fifth victory of the season as they defeated Laurier 2-0 in their 2016 OUA season finale.

After a scoreless opening half, Brock opened the scoring in the 70th minute when Megan Salisbury set up Brooke Boekestyn who fired it past goalkeeper Katie Dickey for her fifth goal of the season.

In the 90th minute, Salisbury set up Stephanie Sanders who buried her second career OUA goal to give the Badgers the 2-0 lead. Salisbury finished the game with two assists.

In goal, Lauren MacCulloch made seven saves for her first shutout of the season.

Cross country

The cross country team swept the Brock Open Saturday. Both the men’s and women’s team walked away with the win after a great two races.

The Brock women ran an impressive four-kilometre, finishing with five athletes within the top 10 finishers. Joanna Francolini led the Badgers with a thirdplace finish, in a time of 15:55. Right behind her were veteran teammates Erin Laughlin (4th, 16:09) and Brittany Murphy (5th, 16:12). Rookies Paulina Sergnese (9th, 16:29), Cassandra Hinz (10th, 16:37) and Martina Walch (19th, 17:48) also competed.

The Brock men also had one of their strongest performanc­es of the season with an exciting number of Badger singlets at the front of the race.

Third-year athlete Jelmer Van Den Hadelkamp led the Badger men, capturing the overall win in a time of 22:10. Team captain Brendan Sanders finished secoond in a time of 23:29, followed by Lucas Salazer-Reid (4th, 23:48), Liam Dolan (7th, 24:11), Branden Gallagher (8th, 24:22), Brett Parent (9th, 24:24), Akshar Patel (12th, 24:32), Shane Singh (19th, 24:56) and Stevie Blankenshi­p (49th, 27:06).

Women’s hockey

The women’s hockey team defeated the York Lions 3-1 Saturday at York.

Christina Ieradi had two goals and Lisa Buratynski one.

Stephanie Loukes played a strong game registerin­g 34 saves.

Men’s hockey

The men’s hockey team came from behind to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 in overtime at the Columbia Ice Gardens Thursday night.

Matt MacLeod and Andrew Radjenovic, with the winner, scored for the Badgers.

In goal, Clint Windsor made his return to the Badgers lineup after missing two games with an injury. He was outstandin­g tonight registerin­g a season high 45 saves, including 20 in the third period.

Brock’s next home game is Saturday 7:15 p.m. when they host the Guelph Gryphons at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

Women’s lacrosse

The women’s lacrosse team ended their 2016 season with a fourth-place finish at the OUA Championsh­ips. In the bronze medal match, the Badgers fell to the Laurier Golden Hawks 12-11 in overtime.

Despite equalizing three times after falling behind in the first half, the Hawks ultimately entered the break a goal down, when Brock’s OUA Second Team All-Star attacker Eryn Brown scored with 2:45 to play to give the Badgers a 5-4 lead.

Laurier was unfazed, and levelled the game just 47 seconds into the second half through Taylor Miller. Four more goals pushed the Hawks ahead 9-5 with just over 18 minutes to play, but the game had plenty of twists left in store.

Beginning with a goal by Lindsey Highfield at 13:32, Brock reeled off four consecutiv­e goals – including a pair from OUA First Team All-Star midfielder Sarah Simpson – to level the game yet again with 8:31 to play. Laurier retook the lead through Miller, before Simpson equalized just a minute later, sending the game to overtime at 10-10.

That set up a frantic extra period in which Simpson scored her fifth and final goal of the game to give the Hawks an 11-10 lead with 2:33 to play, before Brown retaliated just 28 seconds later. With time running out on the overtime period, Selina Kazerian scored the winner.

Head coach Allison Phillips received the OUA Coach of the Year award Sunday.

Men’s basketball

The men’s basketball fell 74-72 in a tight loss to the Dalhousie Tigers at the 2016 RBC Classic Saturday evening at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Brock led by one after one quarter 15-14 and put together a run in the second quarter to take a 39-30 lead at the half.

Brock would get last possession and get two shots, including a Ryan Bennett three-point attempt at the buzzer that rattled off the rim. The loss ended the Badgers’ eight game winning streak.

Dani Elgadi led the game by going 7-for-7 on his free throws, ending the night with 22 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double. Daniel Cayer was also in the double digits finishing with 10 points and six rebounds.

The Badgers will kick off the regular season against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 8 p.m. at the Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Badgers opened the 2016 RBC Classic with a 78-68 victory over the Ryerson Rams.

Four Brock players scored over 10 points in the game led by Cayer with 15 points and eight rebounds. Johneil Simpson and Elgadi contribute­d 14 points each while Tyler Brown had a strong game scoring 13 points with five rebounds, eight assists and four steals.

Men’s volleyball

The men’s volleyball team ended the preseason with a 3-2 comefrom-behind victory over the RMC Paladins.

John Elgersma led the Badgers offence with a game-high 22 kills and eight digs. Matthew Ragogna contribute­d with 12 kills, nine digs and five aces. Timmy Spisar added 11 kills and six digs while Matt Forbes rounded out the Brock leaders chipping in with nine kills and five digs. Setter Marcelo Correa led the Badgers in assists and digs.

Men’s rugby

The men’s rugby team ended the 2016 season with a 38-7 loss to the Western Mustangs at Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.

A try from Dylan Meredith and convert from Nathan Boeyenga scored for Brock.

Men’s golf

The Brock University men’s and women’s golf teams competed at the 2016 OUA Golf Championsh­ips hosted by the University of Windsor Oct. 17-18.

The Brock men found themselves in ninth place after Day 1 of the championsh­ips, then battled back on Day 2 with the second best team finish to finish tied for fourth place overall and qualify for the CIS National Championsh­ips next spring. The Brock women were seventh. Leading the Brock men was Drew Athoe who finished tied for 15th overall with two round total of 145 (75-70). Matt Deven (72-76=148), Aaron Black (74-74=148) and Jonathon Snook (76-72=148) all finished tied for 26th place while Adam Graham placed 37th (76-74=150).

For the Brock women, Shannon Rowan placed 19th overall with a two round total of 172 (86-86). Lucia Leone finished 28th (90-89=179), Alexis Batt 29th (95-88=183) and Nikki Flannagan 38th. (108-99=207).

Niagara College Golf

The Knights golf program captured a pair of Canadian Collegiate Athletic Associatio­n national championsh­ips in Charlottet­own, PEI.

Josiah Dixon shot 5-under-par to capture the men’s individual championsh­ip, while the men’s team of Dixon, Evan Littlefiel­d, Brett Shewchuk, Logan Lammerant and Ben Kenel shot a cumulative three day total of 879 to capture a one stroke victory. Dixon, and Knights women’s golfer Lorelle Weavers (Burlington) were also named CCAA All-Canadians.

Men’s soccer

The Niagara College men’s soccer team punch their ticket to the 2016 OCAA Championsh­ip as the team travelled to Sudbury for a playoff match against the Cambrian Golden Shield.

The Knights earned an impressive 2-1 victory and will now face the St. Clair Saints in the opening round of the OCAA Championsh­ip hosted by Redeemer University College.

Alex Latham (Welland) and Aaron VanVelzen (St. Catharines) recorded goals for the Knights against Cambrian.

Women’s basketball

The women’s basketball program opened the 2016-17 season with a dominant 77-47 road victory over the Sheridan Bruins.

The Knights were paced by Courtney McPherson (Welland) who finished with 16 points. Jean Vanier grad Brooke-Lyn Murdoch (Welland) turned in a dominant all-around effort, finishing with 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals, earning her Knights athlete of the week accolades.

Women’s soccer

The women’s soccer program were eliminated from 2016 OCAA playoffs. The Knights travelled to Sudbury to take on the Cambrian Golden Shield where they dropped a 2-0 decision.

Men’s basketball

The men’s basketball program open the 2016-17 season with a tough 84-80 road loss to the powerhouse Sheridan Bruins. Rookie forward Van Hutchison, Jr. paced the Knights finishing with 18 points, while Lequan Hylton added 15.
