- JEFF STEVENS SPECIAL TO POSTMEDIA NETWORK

Dan Stup has been coming on strong the past few weeks of the Niagara Five-Pin Mixed Pro League season.

The league kicked off its third and final segment of the year, and Stup started off his segment with a flourish, despite his team, the Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Town Criers dropping a 2-1 decision to the Smith’s Home Services Ravens in a match decided by only three pins.

Stup connected for his best set of the season, a lane scorching 913 (319, 274, 320) while getting helped along by Mickey Pikor’s 681 (361). Riekie Dutcher took the reins for the winners firing a blistering 866 (313, 242, 311) and Rich Vassos backed her up with a solid 765 (271, 256, 238).

In another close match, this one decided by a mere 15 pins, the Church Street Pete’s Pizza Panzerottis edged the Scott Street Pete’s Pizza Pepperonis 2-1. Chantal Papineau had the hot hand for the Panzerottis, rolling a fantastic 847 (268, 310, 269) while getting help from P.J. Cole’s 733 (244, 236, 253) and John Wendel’s 674 (229, 241).

The Pepperonis answered with Shawn Pellizari’s 747 (237, 258, 252), Trish Aubertin’s 732 (298, 236) and Rob Fisher’s 717 (238, 243).

Close matches were the order of the day, as another one decided by a slim margin of only 24 pins, the Host Pub & Grill Half Pints took two of three from the Crossfire Wrestling Piledrivers. Tracy Smith led the winners with an excellent 822 (288, 291, 243) while Sarah Stevens chipped in with 710 (262, 258).

The Piledrivers returned fire with Brian McFarlane’s 767 (243, 245, 279).

The Oh Canada Eh Dinner Show Canucks knocked off the Lakeside Electrical Lightning 2-1 as Norm Stup paved the way for the winners with a fine 727 (291, 225) while being backed up by Dave Pendlebury’s 708 (252, 238) and Tim Dixon’s 686 (235, 277).

The Lightning struck back with Tyler Wendel, who just missed the magic 900 mark, settling for a sizzling 898 (283, 255, 360) and Wilma Vanderzwaag who checked in with 765 (266, 270, 229).

In the evening’s final match the Wine Place Whiners defeated the Ferguson-Neudorf Glass Glaziers 2-1. Chris Disher paced the winners with a great 818 (317, 262, 239) set while being aided by Matt Burghall’s 732 (214, 234, 284) and Al Gaudet who added 675 (227, 243).
