‘Bad day at the office’ for River Lions
Titans set NBL Canada record for 3-pointers in win over River Lions
The Kitchener-Waterloo Titans were record setters Tuesday night.
The Titans, playing a home game at The Aud, set a National Basketball League of Canada record draining 25 three-pointers en route to a 120-103 victory over the Niagara River Lions.
Kitchener-Waterloo shot 51 per cent from beyond the arc to improve to 13-17 in its inaugural season, while the River Lions fell to 9-20.
“Their three’s were huge,” said Niagara head coach Keith Vassell. “We were not able to contain them, but it was definitely a bad day at the office.”
The Titans stormed out to a 3017 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
The River Lions shot a respectable 46.7 per cent from the field as Kirk Williams Jr. led Niagara and the floor with 32 points.
“Kirk has been a pacemaker all season for us,” said Vassell.
Former Lion Adam Blazek scored 24 of his team-high 28 points for Kitchener-Waterloo via the threepointer.
Sammy Zeglinski made his return to the Niagara lineup and scored six points to go along with seven assists and six rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
“With Sammy back and Logan (Stutz) just returning it’s almost as if we’re a new team in many ways,” Vassell said.
“Sammy will bounce back Saturday.”
The River Lions outscored the Titans 56-16 in the paint, and also outrebounded them 55-50, but in the end Kitchener-Waterloo’s record night from three-point land was the difference.
The same two teams meet again Saturday night in Kitchener-Waterloo before the River Lions welcome the Saint John Riptide Sunday afternoon.
