A Welland man is dead following a single vehicle crash on Kalar Road in Niagara Falls, early Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to Kalar Road near Mount Carmel Boulevard around 4 a.m. in response to a report of motor vehicle collision.

Niagara Regional Police say a passerby spotted a 2006 Cadillac upside down in a farmer’s field and called police.

An initial investigation indicates the car was travelling down Kalar Road when it left the roadway and struck a number of trees on the east side of the road. The vehicle continued into a field where it rolled over several times becoming to a rest on its roof.

The driver, a 54-year-old Welland resident whose name has not been released, was found inside the vehicle. NRP Const. Phil Gavin said the driver suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no other occupants inside, police said.

The crash remains under investigation by detectives from the NRP collision reconstruction unit.

Anyone with information on the incident or who may have witnessed the collision is asked to call police at 905-688-4111.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate a single-vehicle crash on Netherby Road near Crowland Avenue Monday night that sent three people to hospital.

In that case, an SUV driven by a 42-year-old Fort Erie woman, crashed into a hydro pole and rolled over in a field.

The driver was airlifted to an out-of-town hospital and the two passengers, a 39-year-old Port Colborne man and a 23-year-old Welland man, were taken to hospital by ambulance.

Gavin said Thursday that two people remain in hospital in serious condition.
