One egg, eggstra large please

- HARLEY DAVIDSON SPECIAL TO POSTMEDIA

Criveller Cakes has created what they’re calling Canada’s largest Easter egg.

The massive egg is made from approximately 10kg of European style chocolate and stands nearly 69 cm tall. Is that enough chocolate for the Easter weekend? Maybe.

One of the giant eggs is on display at the Prince of Wales hotel in Niagara-on-the-Lake and will be auctioned off in a silent auction with proceeds going to the Niagara chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

The winner of the silent auction be announced on Easter Sunday at 3 p.m.

Creating the Criveller eggs is a long tradition in Niagara Falls, with the giant Easter eggs going back 15 years.

Giovanni Del Priore, co-owner of Criveller Cakes, says they’ve done their research and that they believe the eggs are record-breaking for Canada.

This year they’ve made six of the massive eggs, more than 5,000 eggs in various other sizes and more than 3,000 chocolate bunnies.

Leonardo Priore, head chocolatier and co-owner of Criveller Cakes says their shop is a staple for Easter, offering “a little bit of Europe in Niagara Falls,” and attracting customers from all over.

Del Priore says that they’re always looking to make the eggs bigger and better, but couldn’t say what they’re aiming for next year. He says it’ll be a surprise.

Criveller Cakes have made cakes and confections for some big names in the past, including Celine Dion, American quarterback Jim Kelly and even Donald Trump, long before he was president of the Unit- ed States. If you’re looking to get your hands on one of their large eggs, they come with a price tag of $500.
