Boxers who currently fight out of the St. Catharines Boxing Club will be sharing top billing on the club’s next card with puglists from the past.

As well as showcasing the skills of nine local fighters, the 11th annual Niagara Legends Boxing Show will pay tribute to five men whose names have become synonymous with boxing and martial arts in the region.

Jason Topolinsky was a Canadian and an Ontario champion from Welland, while the late John Degazio Sr. went on to open the Niagara Falls Boxing Club after being on an All-American boxing team that fought out of Fort Bragg, N.C.

Jerry Zolnierczyk was head coach of the Joslin’s Kickboxing Club on St. Paul Street in St. Catharines where he coached his brothers Jessy and Rocky to Canadian kickboxing titles.

Jessy Zolnierczyk, who also was involved in boxing, compiled a 23-4 record and won a national championship in kickboxing.

He shared credit for that success with his older brother.

“I would never have gotten involved in martial arts and boxing if it wasn’t for my brother,” Jessy said. “He deserves immense credit for getting us all started.”

“Truly, a supreme instructor.” Steve was an Ontario super heavyweight boxing champ taking that title when he was also named best boxer of the tournament. Steve also helped coach at his brother’s club.

Topolinsky recalled that boxing ’s impact on his life wasn’t limited to what happened inside of the ring.

“Boxing taught me that you don’t have to be great at what you do, as long as you work hard, try your best and don’t give up.”

He credited the sport for giving him confidence “as a young kid, when I had no self-esteem.”

“I owe my great success today to all that I was taught from the day I walked into the club.”

Brothers Daniel and Gerry Ryan, Rene Chavez, P.J. Clarke, James Hughes, Jake Isenor, Karli McCabe, Matt Morris and Dennis Steingart are scheduled to fight for the St. Catharines Boxing Club at the benefit show.

Joe Corrigan, the club’s general manager, said another special guest for the night, Razor Ruddock, has confirmed his attending.

The visit to St. Catharines will be a busman’s holiday for Ruddock, who fought seven world championship fights, including two against Mike Tyson.

In addition to mingling with fans and signing autographs, Ruddock will have one or two fighters competing in the show.

Proceeds from the show taking place Friday at Merritton Community Centre, 7 Park Ave., St. Catharines, will benefit the Wise Guys Charity Fund.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the first bout set for 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door.

Advance tickets and ringside VIP tables are available by calling 905988-1244.
