The Numbers Game, the current show at the Showboat Theatre in Port Colborne, is a romantic comedy that its actors say is relatable to the audience.

The two-hour show follows the stories of Bernadette and Phil, who went to high school together, as they reunite 37 years later after Phil responds to Bernadette’s roommate wanted ad.

David Rosser, who plays Phil, said it’s a ‘he knew her, but she didn’t know him’ situation where he was a math nerd and she was the popular girl in school.

“(Phil) was one of those fellows who faded into the background,” Rosser said of his character.

He said throughout the show, the two characters help each other discover who they are.

Nora Sheehan, who is Rosser’s wife, plays Bernadette. She said the play is a lot of fun and they’ve had many people come up to them after the show to share their stories. She said it’s amazing how many people can relate to the romantic comedy; she would expect it from a play with a lot of depth and meaning, but to have it from this kind of show is a bit of a surprise.

Even now, during the third run of The Numbers Game, she said people still approach them.

“Everyone’s got a story within our story,” Sheehan said.

The pair said they stumbled on the play by chance and when they were asked to be a part of it they jumped on board. At the very beginning, they worked with playwright John Spurway to develop the characters, which is a rare opportunity. Because of all the work they’ve done, they know the characters inside and out.

Rosser said the show has changed subtly from showing to showing, just to keep it as fresh as possible. They also give it their best effort every time since there are always new people watching and they deserve just as good of a show as anyone else.

The show is close to its end, having started last week at Showboat, but there are still a few more shows left — two today, one Friday and two Saturday.

With this being the Canal Days weekend in Port Colborne, they know it could mean more people want to be outdoors. The pair encouraged people to come out to watch the show during the festivities.

There are still tickets available for the shows by call ing the box office at 905-834-0833. More information is also available at showboattheatre.ca.
