CBS All Access comes to Canada next year
TORONTO — U.S. streaming service CBS All Access is coming to Canada next year.
The subscription platform behind the upcoming original series Star Trek: Discovery and The Good Wife spinoff The Good Fight says it’s looking to expand into new markets.
The first stop will be Canada in the first half of 2018.
Last year, Bell Media announced it had acquired the exclusive rights to Star Trek: Discovery in Canada, which would have its debut episode air on CTV before being broadcast on Space and Z. It was also announced the show would later be available to stream on CraveTV.
It’s unclear if those plans will change, or if Star Trek: Discovery will be available on CBS All Access in Canada.
In the U.S., CBS All Access offers a vast library of current prime-time hits such as Big Bang Theory, Madam Secretary and NCIS, as well as the day-time soap The Young and the Restless. There’s also a selection of classic hit TV series like Cheers, Beverly Hills 90210 and Taxi.
The company has also started to produce a roster of buzzworthy shows exclusively for the service, including an online version of its Big Brother reality series.
A monthly subscription to CBS All Access costs US $5.99 per month in the U.S., while users can pay $9.99 for a commercialfree version. Prices for Canada haven’t been announced.
CBS All Access will be competing for attention with Netflix Canada and CraveTV, as well as a growing number of other streaming platforms vying for digital subscribers.
Last month, the sports streaming service DAZN launched in Canada, offering live and ondemand coverage of every NFL game. Last week it also announced it will offer streams of European soccer, Russian hockey, tennis, rugby, motorsports and darts.
