Brock rowers compete at Games

Brock rowers won eight medals at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Kenora this past weekend.

The men from the Badgers rowing team helped Ontario dominate the men’s events on Rabbit Lake in northweste­rn Ontario.

Luke Gadsdon from Hamilton led the way with two gold medals winning the men’s pair and the men’s eight. Right behind him was Owen Volkner of St. Catharines, who won gold in the lightweigh­t men’s four and then raced as a heavyweigh­t placed second for a silver in the men’s heavy four.

Erik Hohnstein from Edmonton also won two medals placing third in the men’s eight and third in the men’s quad with Alberta.

Incoming recruit Anna Maloney from Niagara Falls won gold in the women’s quad, and was fourth in the women’s double.

Amanda Martin from Orono came third in the women’s eight and fourth in the women’s four. Alicia Piazza came fourth in the lightweigh­t women’s double. The women’s efforts helped Ontario place second overall in the women’s points standings.

Coaching the Ontario men’s team to a solid first place finish over all in Kenora were Brock coaches Andrea Miller of Hamilton and Ron (Swede) Swede Burak of Welland.

Three rowers from the Wellandbas­ed South Niagara Rowing Club also returned home from Kenora with medals.

Jared Naar won gold medals in the men’s quad and men’s eight, and Rebecca Camplin and Jasmine Leheta and Rebecca bronze in a women’s eight coxied by Riley Raso, who also is from Welland.

The Ontario Rowing team did well overall winning seven gold medals, one silver and two bronze.

School won’t be back in until next month, but most of the Brock rowers will be in St. Catharines this week at the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta for their home clubs where they have trained for the summer.
