Draw for 1970 Chevelle SS

-

At least 300 classic cars will take over Pelham’s Centennial Park Saturday as the Fenwick Lions hold their first ever classic car show and raffle.

“That’s provided the weather is in our favour,” said Fenwick Lions president Ken Suthons.

Suthons expects to see cars from the 1930s right on up to the 1980s, with the majority being from the ’50s and ’60s.

“There’s no real cutoff date … the cars will be judged in various categories.”

He said it’s the Lions’ second car show, but the first time they are combing it with a classic car raffle.

The organization has been selling tickets, at $10, for a 1970 Chevelle SS that is appraised at $36,000.

The car, red with black SS stripes, was originally purchased on Oct. 10, 1969, in Prescott, Wisc., for US$3,741.90.

Suthons said the only opportunity left to purchase tickets — there were 10,000 printed — for the car is Saturday before the draw at 3 p.m.

The event gets underway at 8 a.m. with a breakfast running until about 10:30 a.m., put on by the Fenwick Lions. The Lions will be running the park food court, which includes a fish fry fundraiser and barbecue. A beer and wine garden opens at 11 a.m.

As many as 30 vendors will be at the park during the day, and Suthons expects things to kick into gear at 10 a.m.

“We have live entertainment with Second Heaven playing and an Elvis impersonator.” Admission to car show is free. Suthons said all funds raised from the raffle and food court will be put toward charities the Lions Club sponsors, including Canadian Diabetes Foundation, Dog Guides Canada and community projects.

One of those community projects sees the Lions donate funds to the family of a Fenwick boy battling Lyme disease, said Suthons.

Centennial Park is at 999 Church St. in Fenwick. The event runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
