Frisbee athletes tops

A women’s rugby player is the Brock University female athlete of the week while a lacrosse player and men’s ultimate player earned co-male honours.

Niamh Haughey, a second-year physical education major, helped lead the Brock women’s rugby team to a school record fifth win of the season as they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks by the score of 3210 in the consolatio­n semifinal.

Haughey led all scorers with a game-high 12 points adding two tries and a convert. For the effort she was named the Brock Muscle MLK women’s athlete of the week.

Brandon Slade, a fifth year kinesiolog­y major, led the Badgers to three victories on the weekend. In three games, he recorded 18 points adding five goals and 13 assists. In the Badgers 21-2 victory over McMaster, Slade registered his 300th career point, becoming just the second player in school history to reach this mark. In 64 career games, Slade has recorded 302 points, including 122 goals and 180 assists.

Haughey shared the award with Jeremy Hill, a fifth-year sport management major, who led the Brock men’s Ultimate Frisbee team to their first Division 2 National Championsh­ip in school history.

The Badgers posted a perfect 6-0 record, including an upset over the No. 1 ranked University of Quebec and Montreal) in the gold medal final. Hill, the team captain, led the team in assists and defensive blocks.

MEN’S LACROSSE

ON A ROLL

The Brock University men’s lacrosse team rolled past the Laurier Golden Hawks by the score of 17-6 Saturday afternoon at the Seymour-Hannah Centre. With the win, the Badgers improve to 9-0 in the CUFLA West Division.

Laurier got on the board first, before Brock answered with 14 of the next 15 goals to take 14-2 lead early in the third quarter.

Slade finished with a game-high 11 points registerin­g two goals and assists. Davis Neal recorded four goals while Saul Van Der Zalm, Connor Ham and Nicholas Rybka all added two goals each.

MEN’S LACROSSE WINS IN OT

The Brock University men’s lacrosse team improved to 8-0 on the season as they defeated the Western Mustangs by the score of 12-8 in overtime to remain in first place in the CUFLA West Division.

Brock was up 7-5 midway through the fourth quarter, before the host Mustangs added two, including one with 12 second left in regulation sending it to overtime.

In overtime, the Badgers held a 9-8 lead after one overtime and closed out the game with three straight in the second overtime, on route to the 12-8 overtime victory.

MEN’S ULTIMATE CAPTURES TITLE

The Brock men’s Ultimate team traveled to Ottawa to compete at the Canadian University Ultimate Championsh­ips (Nationals).

Brock used a full team effort to pull off the upset and bring home the first Division 2 National Championsh­ip in school history. Leading the way on offense this weekend was veteran players Nelson Le, Jeremy Hill and Micheal Carty. On defense Nathan Hsieh, Jake Wojczuik and Chris Caldwell all provided great individual performanc­es that generated team success.

Brock women’s Ultimate took on an intense weekend at Nationals in Ottawa.

After many hard fought games, the women’s team placed fifth, with an overall record of two wins and three losses.

OUA GOLF CHAMPIONSH­IPS

The Brock University men’s and women’s golf teams competed at the 2017 OUA Golf Championsh­ips hosted by the University of Ottawa at the Loch March Golf and Country Club with the women finishing in sixth place overall with a twoday total of 515 (257-258). Leading Brock was Shannon Rowan who placed 16th overall with a score of 167 (86-81). Lauren Hines was 26th - 175 (90-85) while Julia Moretto 28th - 176 (84-92) and Alexis Batt 33rd 187 (87-100).

The Brock men finished tied for 7th overall with a two-day total of 612 (306-306). After being tied for the lead after Day 1, Matt Deven finished 16th overall with a total of 151 (71-80). Adam Graham 153 (81-72) and Peter Leone 153 (7578) both placed 22nd while Jonathon Snook T33rd - 156 (79-77) and Jordan Lisko T55th - 162 (83-79) rounded out the Brock scores.

Graham and Rowan were both named to the OUA 2nd Team AllStars.

BROCK TOPS LAURIER IN WOMEN’S RUGBY

The Brock University women’s rugby team defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 32-10 Saturday night on the road.

Leading the Badgers offense was Haughey who recorded 12 points. Single tries came from Jenna Rainville, Taylour Hurd, Amarije Barnes and Katelyn Heyens.

MEN’S RUGBY FALLS TO WESTERN

The Brock University men’s rugby team dropped a 50-29 decision to the Western Mustangs on the road Saturday afternoon. With the loss the Badgers fall to 4-3 on the season. Spencer Karn led the Badgers scoring with three converts and two penalty goals for 12 points. The Badgers, who have clinched a playoff berth, will close out the OUA regular season at home October 21 as they host Trent Excalibur at 1 p.m. on Alumni Field.

ROWERS STRONG AT INVITATION­AL

Brock had a great day on the Henley course hosting the Brock Invitation­al Regatta.

The lightweigh­t men led the way winning the light men’s eight and four. The light men, led by Taylor Ashwood and Owen Volkner, swept the light men’s pair event placing first second and third. The heavy weight men were led by Matt Finley winning the single and then placing second in the eight and crew mates placed third in the pair and four.

Lightweigh­t women were led by their world champion coxie Laura Court to second place finishes in the eight and four. The lightweigh­t women also placed third in the pair. The dynamic duo of Amanda Martin and Anna Maloney had a punishing schedule racing in the women’s pair placing 2nd and then only 40 minutes later winning the women’s double. That was followed by the women’s four of Isabella Mazzarollo, Bri Spanics, Jenna Osborne, and Kayla Krasnor with a solid second place finish and then they combined with four freshmen to place fourth in the eight.

BASEBALL TEAM FALLS IN QUARTER-FINALS

The No.1 seeded Brock Badgers headed into OUA championsh­ip weekend in good shape with a bye into the quarter-finals, where they meet the 9th seeded Waterloo Warriors.

The Badgers left the bases loaded in the first inning and were only able to score one run.

Freshman Jacob Ebbs relieved starter Derek Zwolinski in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and two outs looking but struggled to find the zone for the Badgers as the Warriors took a 4-2 lead.

Next out of the pen was Jake Near who surrender another Waterloo run. Chase Porter was excellent in his two innings in relief but the score wound up 5-3 final in favour of the Warriors.

FINAL WEEKEND IN WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The Brock University women’s lacrosse team finished their last regular season weekend with a win and two losses. The Badgers won 13-5 against UOIT Ridgebacks, lost 13-5 against Queens Gaels, and had a hard fought 12-8 loss Sunday against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Badgers led UOIT 6-1 in the first half before adding in seven more goals in the second.

Emma Mete, Marianna Andrade and Mikayla Vaz all registered two goals and two assists in the win.

MEN’S HOCKEY OPENER IN OT

The Brock University men’s hockey team dropped a tough 4-3 decision in a shootout to the York Lions Saturday at the SeymourHan­nah Centre.

Brock opened the scoring with less than five minutes to play in the opening period as Jeff Corbett and Even Morden setup Mack Lemmon for his first goal of the regular season.

York peppered Brock starter Clint Windsor in the second period putting 16 more on net for a two period total of 29. With a mandown, the Lions would even the game with at 13:43 with a shorthande­d marker by Kyle Campbell. Andrew Doyle added the assist.

Brock’s Clint Windsor finished with a game-high 49 saves in the loss. York’s Alex Fortinos collected 33 saves for the victory.

The Brock dropped a 3-2 decision to the Guelph Gryphons in their OUA regular season opener Wednesday night on the road.

Brock would even the game 1-1 eight minutes into the second period as Braeden Pears and Dexter Weber found Ayden MacDonald for his first goal of his Badgers OUA career. The Badgers took a at 2-1 lead with four minutes left in the second period, as Chris Maniccia setup Matt MacLeod who put it past Guelph goaltender Andrew Masters.

With less than a minute left in the third period, the Gryphons would tie it 2-2 with a goal from Tryg Strand.

In the third, Guelph’s Reilly O’Connor found Nick Boyer on the edge of the crease. Boyer beat Clint Windsor high stick side for the game winning goal with six minutes left in regulation.

WINS ON AND OFF THE COURT

More than 900 kids packed Bob Davis Gymnasium Thursday as the Brock Badgers men’s basketball team hosted its third annual Badgers vs. Bullying outreach event for elementary students in Grades 6 through 8.

The guest speakers included Brock men’s basketball head coach Charles Kissi, Henley Honda owner Alex Digenis, Niagara River Lions player Joe Rocca and Brock Vice-President, Administra­tion Brian Hutchings.

On the court, the Badgers defeated the Redeemer Royals 107-69 in an exhibition.

The Badgers had three players in double figures led by Cassidy Ryan who finished with a game-high 24 points going 9-for-12 from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. He also pulled down six boards and added three assists. Dani Elgadi contribute­d with 19 points and five rebounds while Johneil Simpson added 16 points and four assists.

WOMEN BOW

TO BISHOP’S

The Brock University women’s basketball fell to 0-2 at the Dalhousie Tournament as they dropped an 82-52 decision to the Bishop’s Gaiters Saturday.

Sephanie Findlay led the Badgers with 15 points and six rebounds. Courtney Mcpherson collected 10 points and six rebounds while Ana Caldeira Rua rounded out the Brock leaders with seven points and a career high 11 boards.

Friday, the Badgers dropped a 67-60 decision to the Dalhousie Tigers Friday night at Dalhousie Centennial Tournament.

Leading the Badgers offense was Shannon Northey who recorded 15 points and eight rebounds. Kristin Gallant collected 12 points and five rebounds while Caldeira Rua and Baelie Campbell both chipped in with nine points each in the loss.

CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM ON THE RUN

The Brock Badgers cross-country team travelled to Hamilton for the Marauder Bayfront Open.

This race provided fast conditions for all with a mostly flat course, very ideal cross-country weather and a deep field of competitio­n.

Annelise Martin led the women to the finish line with an impressive time of 27:47 for seven kilometres in 56th place, with Erin Laughlin following, coming in 61st with a time of 28:02.

The men’s team pulled together some great performanc­es this race producing a 9th overall team result. The men were led by fourth year veteran Jelmer Van Dan Hadelkamp, who finished 12th overall (9th scoring) in a time of 21:26 for seven kilometres.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL WINS TOURNEY

The Brock University women’s volleyball team posted a perfect 4-0 record as they captured the Niagara College Invitation­al. The Badgers posted victories over Mohawk (3-0), Georgian (3-0), Durham (3-1) and Niagara College (30).

Laura Condotta was named MVP.
