Falcons shower Meteors with goals

Michael Davies fired a hat-trick as the St. Catharines Falcons defeated the visiting Fort Erie Meteors 9-4 in Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League action Friday.

Davies had two of his goals in the first period as the Falcons built a 3-1 lead and never looked back on the way to sixth victory on a row.

The Falcons increased the margin to 7-3 after two periods.

Arber Xhekaj added two goals for St. Catharines. Romeo D’Intino, Lucas Smilsky, Tyler MacArthur and Tanner Ferreira had one goal apiece.

Smilsky and Ferreira picked up three assists each. Xhekaj and two.

Kevin Weaver-Vitale, Mike Masotti, Alex McAteer and Marco Lariccia replied for Fort Erie. Luca Masso had two assists.

The Falcons went 2-for-6 on the power play. Fort Erie was 1-9.

The Falcons are 17-4-0-2 and are in second place behind Caledonia (18-3-0-1). Caledonia has one game in hand. Fort Erie is 7-13-1-3 and in eight place, ahead of only Buffalo (1-20-0-2).

St. Catharines outshot Fort Erie 38-35 in the game.

Owen Savory stopped 31 of 35 shots to get the win in net for St. Catharines.

Jacob Heame took the loss in goal for Fort Erie. He stopped 29 of 38 shots.

St. Catharines is in Caledonia Saturday. Fort Erie host Buffalo.

Canucks 5, Panthers 2

At Niagara Falls, Owen Green scored twice to lead the Canucks to a win over visiting Pelham.

Garrett Downie, Matthew Caruso, and Frank Pucci had one goal apiece for Niagara Falls which defeated the Panthers for the third time in three starts this season.

Thomas Young and Noah Caperchion­e replied for Pelham.

The Panthers led 2-1 after one period before falling to 8-14-1-2.

Niagara Falls improved to 176-0-2 and extended its streak of earning at least one point to nine games.

Niagara Falls heads to Pelham Sunday afternoon for a rematch.

Tonight’s other Golden Horseshoe junior B action has the Welland Jr. Canadians, 9-14-1-2, visiting the Ancaster Avalanche, 17-5.
