A woman is dead and two people were taken to hospital Monday after a two-vehicle crash at Townline Tunnel Road and Canal Bank Street in Welland.

A 59-year-old Welland woman was extricated from her vehicle and pronounced dead on scene, OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said via livestream to his Twitter account.

The crash, which happened just before 1:30 p.m., involved an SUVtype vehicle and a pickup truck. A northbound vehicle on Canal Bank Street and a westbound vehicle on Townline Tunnel Road collided in the intersection, Schmidt said.

The SUV ended up in the ditch on the north side of Townline Tunnel Road, just west of the intersection near Welland International Flatwater Centre, while the pickup ended up on its roof along the bank near the Welland Recreational Canal pathway.

Schmidt said in his broadcast the two people from one other vehicle were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Roads were closed for several hours while emergency services responded to and investigated the scene. The OPP collision reconstruction team was also on site.

Although family have been notified, Schmidt said the name of the deceased is not being released at this time.

Schmidt said in an interview afterward that as of 4:20 p.m. it was too early to know if there were any charges, but he did not expect any to be laid.
