Falcons sweep weekend series

Jaleel Adams netted two goals as the visiting St. Catharines Falcons edged the Niagara Falls Canucks in junior B hockey Sunday afternoon.

Michael Davies also scored for the Falcons who won their sixth straight and completed a sweep of a weekend home-and-home series.

Noah Boman and Dillon Hill replied for the Canucks who lost their second in row after ending an eight-game streak in which they earned at least a point.

St. Catharines outshot Niagara Falls 32-19 and each team finished 0-for-3 on the power play.

The come-from-behind win before an announced crowd of 501 at Gale Centre improved the Falcons’ record against the Canucks to 4-1 and to 27-7-1-2.

Niagara Falls fell to 25-10-0-4 in league play and trail St. Catharines by three points for third place in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference.

The Falcons opened the homeand-home series with a 4-1 victory Friday night in St. Catharines.

This week’s schedule has the Falcons home to the Caledonia Corvairs Tuesday, beginning at 7 p.m., and the Canucks hosting the Ancaster Avalanche Friday, also at 7 p.m.

St. Catharines leads the season series with Caledonia three wins to two. Niagara Falls is 0-4 in league play versus Ancaster.

At Fort Erie, Noah Bollert had two goals, Brendan Rylott a goal and two assists, and visiting Welland defeated.

Noah Blakely, Alexander Dameski, Matt Hobbs and Tanner McEachern rounded out the scoring for Welland which continued its dominance over Fort Erie in head-to-head play.

The come-from-behind victory improved the Jr. Canadians to 4-1 in the season series versus the Meteors and to 14-19-3-2 overall in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League’s Golden Horseshoe Conference.

Charles Grimard stopped 22 shots to earn the win in goal for Welland.

Drew Passero, Brady Lee and Evan Miller replied for the Meteors who were outshot 30-25 and dropped to 9-25-1-5 in league play.

Welland finished the game 3-for5 on the power play; Fort Erie, 1-for-7.

The Jr. Canadians are back on the ice Sunday hosting the Thorold Blackhawks, 15-17-3-3, in a 7:05 p.m. faceoff at Welland Arena.

Fort Erie is off until a home game against the St. Catharines Falcons Saturday beginning at 7:45 p.m.

Welland is 1-0-3-0 versus Thorold in head-to-head play. Fort Erie is 0-5 against St. Catharines.

Corvairs 5, Blackhawks 3

At Caledonia, the host Corvairs jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back defeating Thorold to extend their winning streak to 17 games.

Bailey Fletcher, with two goals, Joshua DeFarias, Nolan Gardiner and Jeremy Lauzon found the back of the net for Caledonia.

Daniel Rocco, Bailey Stumpo and Matt Maidens found the back of the net for the Blackhawks.

Shots on net were 39-13 in favour of the Corvairs, who improved to a Golden Horsehoe Conference­leading 32-3-0-1 with their fourth win over Thorold in as many starts.

Neither team was able to score on the power play Saturday night. Thorold went 0-for-3 with the man advantage; Caledonia, 0-for-4.

The Corvairs wrapped up a fourpoint weekend Sunday afternoon at Pelham Arena where they skated past the Pelham Panthers 6-1.

The win was Caledonia’s fourth in as as many games against the Panthers this season.

Pelham dropped to 13-22-1-3.

Avalanche 5, Regals 2

At Ancaster, the Avalanche lived up to their name burying visiting Buffalo to extend their streak of earning at least one point to 14 games.

Second-place Ancaster improved to 29-7-1-1 and moved five points ahead of idle St. Catharines in the conference thanks to goals from Nicholas Breault, Tanner Brennecke, Matthew Bridgwater, Kyle Kennery and Dirk Stadig.

Nash Braun and Joseph Trifone scored for Buffalo, which was outshot 40-24 and lost its 21st in a row to fall to 1-34-0-3, last in the Golden Horseshoe and last in the league.

The Regals went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Avalanche scored on one on their five opportunit­ies with a man advantage.

Buffalo hosts Thorold for a 7 p.m. faceoff Tuesday.
