Brock nets 12th straight victory

Badgers sweep season series with Western to stay undefeated on road

Brock defeated Western 9251 Wednesday night in London, Ont., to remain undefeated on the road in men’s university basketball league play.

Johneil Simpson led the Badgers in scoring with a game-high 27 points as Brock improved to 11-0 away from Bob Davis Gymnasium with one road game remaining in the regular season.

The fourth-year guard shot 11for-16 from the floor and 5-for-10 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Badgers, second to 21-0 Carleton in the national rankings, won their 12th in a row to improve to a West Division-leading 21-2.

Brock closes out the season with a 6 p.m. tipoff Saturday against Windsor. The Lancers are 11-11 heading into a home game Friday night versus 8-15 Waterloo.

For the second time this season it was the Badgers, not the Mustangs, who had all the horses, and horsepower to spare. Brock responded with a 29-2 run after Western drained a 3-pointer to open the scoring in the game.

The Badgers, who beat the Mustangs 83-58 in the season opener Oct. 25 in St. Catharines, led their hosts 50-25 heading into the third quarter in Wednesday night’s rematch. Dani Elgadi, Kascius Small-Martin and Cassidy Ryan scored 13, nine and eight points, respective­ly, for Brock.

Tyler Brown was the team’s top rebounder with a game-high eight boards. The Badgers outrebound­ed the Mustangs 41-27.

Brock made 53.8 per cent of its field goal attempts, 33-for-65; 45.8 per cent of its 3-point attempts, 11for-24; and 91.7 of its free-throw attempts, 11-for-12.

In comparison, Western finished the game 18-for-63 from the floor, 28.6 per cent; 9-for-25 from long range, 36 per cent; and 6-for-10 from the free-throw line, 60 per cent.

The Badgers prevailed 83-54 In the opening game of the homeand-home with Windsor Jan. 20 at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

Mustangs 71, Badgers 45

At London, Ont., visiting Brock lost its fifth in a row and fell to 6-17 with one game remaining in the women’s basketball regular season.

The Badgers tipped off the season series in the West Division rivalry with a 62-53 victory Oct. 25 in St. Catharines, but they were no match for the Mustangs this time out.

Cold shooting plagued Brock from everywhere on the floor in the rematch: 31.7 per cent from the field, 19-for-60; 13 per cent, long range, 3-for-23; 36.4 per cent, freethrow line, 4-for-11.

Only Badger to score in double digits was Courtney McPherson, with 11 points. Ana Caldeira Rua and Miranda Smith each had eight points.

Brooke-Lyn Murdoch and Lauren Zonneveld each had seven rebounds for Brock.

The Badgers wrap up the regular season 6 p.m. Saturday in Windsor hoping to even the season series versus the Lancers. Windsor took the opener 68-52 Jan. 20 at Brock.
