Political shenanigans proof we need to sweep the slate clean, writes reader

-

One of the nice things about returning home after a couple weeks away is the opportunity to read all the newspapers you have missed.

Well as it turns out nothing much changes here in the Niagara region.

In Niagara Falls, the uproar over vacation rental properties is reminiscent of the great backyard firepit debate of last year that wasted so much of council’s time.

Coun. Wayne Thomson reports calls of complaints every weekend ... sometimes up to 10 ... maybe sometimes only two?

And maybe they are from the same people. Perhaps the same few people that complained about backyard fires.

Seems very unscientific to me.

Combine this with all the “he said, she said” backbiting that goes on and it leaves one scratching one’s head about this council.

And then there is the latest scandal at the Region over the tainted CAO hiring process, this just weeks after the police services board debacle.

I mean how many corporations have to hire a mentor to show two public servants how to get along?

Thank goodness for reporters like

Grant LaFleche, who shone a light on these shenanigans. If only more citizens were paying attention.

But take heart Niagarans because there is a solution.

Next election let’s turf them all out. Wipe the slate clean and start anew. Let’s drag our local governments into the 21st century and have more women, more minorities and people of colour standing for public office.

Let’s have grown-ups represent us that don’t need ethics and behaviour referees.

Maybe then more of us will be represented and and the special interest groups will be pushed to the back of the queue.
