Luciani stepping aside as Thorold’s mayor

- MELINDA CHEEVERS

When Ted Luciani started his career in politics 18 years ago, he said he did so with one goal in mind: to make Thorold great.

On Tuesday afternoon, during his state of the city address at Four Points by Sheraton, Luciani announced he will be vacating his seat in the mayor’s office, one he’s held for the past eight years.

“Creating the vibrancy and fiscal stability that is evident in our city today has been my vision for Thorold and it’s been nearly eight years that I’ve had the privilege and honour to serve as the mayor for the City of Thorold,” he said. “We’ve had some difficult times but this council and our staff have put us in a great position as we move forward, and I firmly believe we have definitely surpassed the goal of making Thorold the best place to live, work, play, study and do business.”

Luciani, 70, told the crowded room, which included members of Thorold city council, representatives from the local business community, and politicians from neighbouring communities, that the job of mayor is not an easy one to undertake and it’s one he couldn’t have done without the support of council or the guidance and dedication of city staff.

“They’ve worked diligently over the years to see our vision for our community come to life and continue to grow,” he said.

Stepping back from the mayor’s seat doesn’t mean Luciani will be stepping away from politics altogether. He has yet to make that decision.
