Skunk in Welland tests positive for rabies

-

A positive rabies test for a skunk found in Welland has prompted Niagara Region Public Health to remind residents to stay away from wild animals.

Even if the animal appears to be in distress, the public health says people should not put themselves at the risk of contracting rabies. Instead, residents are urged to call local humane societies.

This skunk is the first in Welland, but the third animal overall to test positive in 2018, with the other two being raccoons. Public Health states there has been an increase in positive rabies tests since the breakout in 2015 starting in Hamlton, with 12 in 2016 and then 21 in 2017 for the Niagara area. Of all of Niagara’s positive cases, the majority were raccoons.

Although animals don’t always display the signs of rabies, behaviours to watch out for include aggression and other abnormal behaviour.

Rabies is a viral disease, often contracted after being bitten, but public health recommends that residents have all bites or scratches assessed.

People can report animal bites and scratches to public health by calling 905-688-8245 ext. 7590 or 1-888-505-6047 at any time.

The department also advises residents to keep up to date with their pets’ rabies vaccinations, prevent pets from roaming offleash or unsupervised, avoid wild animals and report any animals, especially raccoons, exhibiting abnormal behaviour.
