Cushman Road Park to get less misleading name
Cushman Road Park — which isn’t on Cushman Road — is ready for a new, less misleading name.
The City of St. Catharines is asking residents to help come up with a new moniker for the north-end park, which is at the corner of Carlton Street and Welland Canals Parkway.
The idea for a name change percolated last year when a resident told St. George’s Coun. Mike Britton that the park could use a more appropriate name. Britton made a motion in council in September asking that staff begin the process.
That’s because Cushman Road Park hasn’t been on Cushman Road since the Welland Canals Parkway was constructed.
The park will be the first to be re-named under St. Catharines’ new naming policy for parks, trails and recreational facilities approved by city council last fall.
The policy outlines the process for name changes and prioritizes names in order of civic or historical significance; location or features; and significant individuals, families, organizations and foundations.
It also provides an opportunity for public input and allows for names to recognize people who are still living, along with those who are deceased.
Residents can submit their ideas for a new name for Cushman Road Park at www.stcatharines.ca/ParkName until June 7.
Finalists will be announced June 25 and residents will be able to vote for their favourite. City council will consider the name change in August.
