Police shoot man at hospital
Officers were responding to stabbing call at Fort Erie ‘s Douglas Memorial
The Ontario Special Investigations Unit is investigating after a man was shot by police at the
Fort Erie hospital Friday.
Niagara Regional Police were called to the urgent care centre at Douglas Memorial Hospital shortly before 8 p.m. in response to a stabbing.
According to the SIU, when police arrived they found a 61year-old man suffering from knife wounds. Soon after, a 29year-old man approached the officers.
“There was an interaction between officers and the 29-yearold man, and one officer discharged his firearm,” the SIU said in a news release.
The man was taken to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo, N.Y., for treatment.
The 61-year-old stabbing victim was also taken to the Buffalo hospital. They were last reported by to be in stable condition.
No police officers were injured.
Niagara Health said in a statement the urgent care centre was closed overnight Friday as the SIU conducted its investigation. Patients were re-directed to Greater Niagara General Hospital in Niagara Falls.
The Bertie Street site in Fort Erie re-opened Saturday morning.
The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates inci-
dents involving police when there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the Fort Erie case.
The NRP said it will be conducting a parallel investigation in conjunction with the SIU, and would not be commenting on the issue while the SIU is investigating. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the SIU at 1-800-787-8529. The agency is also urging anyone who may have video evidence related to the incident to upload it through the SIU website, www.siu.on.ca.
