RE: SLOW START TO RACE FOR REGIONAL COUNCILLOR, MAY 31

It was with some interest last week that I read an article interviewing former St. Catharines mayor Brian McMullan concerning the lack of candidates for the upcoming municipal elections.

Could it be that Brian would consider a return to public life as an elected representative?

I had occasion to work with Brian during his last term as mayor in my role as school board trustee. We were looking for a site for the new Harriet Tubman School and had proposed a site by the education centre. Brian preferred a site closer to the downtown core.

It was through his leadership and creativity in closing a section of George Street and dedicating the city park as a playground that we were able to build the new school on the present site within walking distance for 90 per cent of its students.

When you think about it, most of the revitalization of the St. Catharines downtown core was initiated by a Brian McMullan council.

The present council has done an admirable job of following though with the plan but the initiative was definitely that of the previous council.

It is my hope that Brian would consider running for regional chair. His style of quiet, competent, professional leadership is just what our Region needs. Let me be first to propose, Brian McMullan for regional chair.
