Niagara Thunderhaw­ks shut down St. Catharines Spartans

T’Hawks move one point ahead of Spartans in junior B lacrosse standings

Despite a losing week overall in junior B lacrosse, the Niagara Thunderhaw­ks’ lone win was a big one.

The Thunderhaw­ks, 6-9, grounded the St. Catharines Spartains 8-7 as Nathan Maloney notched a hat trick and added an assist. Zach Luis had one goal and three helpers, while Trent Hunter scored twice.

Saul Vanderzalm and Aiden Buis added singles for Niagara which went 3-for-5 on the power play.

The T’Hawks also dropped a 9-7 decision to Six Nations and lost 6-3 to Hamilton.

Reid Lowe led the way for Niagara in the loss to Six Nations with a hat trick and one assist. Luis scored twice and added a helper, while Vanderzalm and Buis also found the back of the net in defeat as the Thunderhaw­ks were outshot 54-34.

Against Hamilton, Niagara scored all three of its goals in the first period but were shut out over the final 40 minutes.

David Moyett, Tony Lloyd and Maloney scored for the T’Hawks.

Spartans pick up huge point

The Six Nations Rebels were 15-0 heading into their home game Friday night against the St. Catharines Spartans.

And the visitors almost shocked all of Ontario lacrosse, but in the end still put up an impressive performanc­e in a 10-10 overtime tie.

Tyler Kolodka and Alex Gaston both recorded hat tricks for the Spartans, 5-9-1. Blake Halladay, Mario Caito, Trent Jackson and Reid Edmands also scored for St. Catharines.

In a rematch Sunday night in Merritton, the Spartans kept things close but ended up dropping an 11-8 decision to the Rebels.

Connor Aquanno had four goals and one assist, as Alex Hornung, Jacob McMillan, Caito and Jake Edmands added singles.

St. Catharines went 3-for-5 on the power play in the loss.

In their 8-7 loss to Niagara, Sam LeClair had four goals and one helper. Aaron Ward, Caito and Aquanno also found the back of the net.

Welland’s woes continue

It was another winless week for the Welland Generals, 1-14.

Talon Badawey continued his torrid scoring pace with four goals and one assist in a 12-7 loss to Hamilton.

Bailey Fournier-Higgins added two goals and one helper, while Gavin McGregor had the other goal for Welland.

Badawey then put up a ninepoint game — four goals, five assists — in a 14-11 penalty filled loss to Point Edward.

Fournier-Higgins added four goals and four helpers in a game that featured 146 minutes in penalties.

Nick Villella and Justin Porga each had three point games with a goal and two assists apiece.

Kage Janes rounded out the scoring for the Generals.

Sunday in London, Welland fell behind 5-1 after the first period in a 14-9 final.

Badawey led the way with three goals and three assists. Fournier-Higgins scored twice and added a helper, Peter Hrynuik and Liam each had one goal and two assists and Mitchell Geoffroy and Spencer Stone added singles.

Badawey now has 35 goals and 36 assists on the season, which puts him in ninth overall in Ontario Junior B scoring.
